Mon 16 January 2012, The Bunghole
The function room (which is large enough for 8 to 10 people) at The Bunghole has been booked in my name for 18:15 on Monday 16th January 2012. Booking ‟for six or seven, but some people might drop out, and others might join” made with Ben.
Apparently they ‟have another tasting group much larger than” us, so they ‟have thousands of glasses on the premises”. Even if not literally true, that bodes well.
First post amended to hold details.
Theme is Croft. Who has which vintages within reach?

Is this an executive decision? I am in favour, but do not feel strongly if others have different ideas...jdaw1 wrote:Theme is Croft.

Re: Mon 16 January 2012, The Bunghole
By strange coincidence a meeting in London has appeared in my diary for the morning of 17th January. Who would have thought that might happen!
I have Croft 1966, 1975 and 2000. I would prefer not to use the 1966 if others have ample supply.
The 1975 is my last bottle that I bought from Tom a few years ago. The batch was apparently liberated from a Lord's cellar (Lichfield and Lucan spring to mind but the latter surely can't be true). The three bottles I have had from that batch have been splendid, in a 1975 sense, and I am happy to chuck my last one in if it is allowed through the door. I am happy to put both 1975 and 2000 on the table if useful.

Re: Mon 16 January 2012, The Bunghole
What would be an acceptable line-up for 6-8 people?
Doing 60,63,66,70,75,77 would be nice.
Last (and only) Croft 82 I had was superb, but 91 and 03 are the other candidates that seem to get the acclaim, DRT has the 00 to hand, and I would not say no to trying the 09 if a single bottle could be acquired.
I only have one roeda 67, so I'm tempted to withold thaat for a completist or niche event.

Hi,
I have plenty of Croft 1982 (20£) and also picked up some 09 Croft the other day . I think both should be included. On the other hand I have only 1 bt of Croft 1960 and would like to keep it for now. Croft 1970 or 1966 can easily come from me .
With regards to what we open I am fairly relaxed; I only would like to suggest to use a different opening technique if possible (pull the cork 3 hours before decanting) for all ports.
regards

If you are close to them, or occasionally visit them, would you be able to take a look at the glasses and check that they are suitable for a port tasting? Otherwise we could end up with a situation similar to the Bowler, when we had hundreds of port thimbles rented in for our tasting.jdaw1 wrote:...they ‟have thousands of glasses on the premises”...
I have little Croft readily available. I could offer bottles from 2005 (LBV), 2004 (LBV in halves), 1991, 1967 (Roeda) or 1963. I have other vintages either older or in full case lots in bond.

I forgot to report that part of the conversation. We discussed port thimbles, of which they apparently have none. The Bunghole has wine glasses.AHB wrote:If you are close to them, or occasionally visit them, would you be able to take a look at the glasses and check that they are suitable for a port tasting? Inconveniently in Sussex I have one bottle of each of 1963 and 1927.
Depending on how many we are, I’d favour something like 1960, ’63, ’66, ’70, ’75, ’77, ’82.RAYC wrote:Doing 60,63,66,70,75,77 would be nice.

Magnums, dear fellow, magnums. Then we could easily accomodate four. Even five, if one or two were non-drinking.DRT wrote:But what if there are more than just you and I?jdaw1 wrote:Depending on how many we are, I’d favour something like 1960, ’63, ’66, ’70, ’75, ’77, ’82.

If Wolfgang is happy to open one of his 66s and 82s, i am happy to retreat to back of line as my stock is more limited. Equally, these bottles were purchased to drink at these types of events, so if we need to spread the cellar burden, they are fully available.RAYC wrote:

CMAG has a 1970 magnum, of which I might adopt a fraction. Do we want a 1970 magnum?
CMAG also has 2000.

Re: Mon 16 January 2012, The Bunghole
There may have been a mis-interpretation of my post in which I identified the vintages of Croft that I was offering. I intended to offer a choice of one of the vintages I mentioned as my bottle to bring - not to volunteer to bring all of them! I'm happy to bring the 1963 as the others should be easier to find if we are bitten by the completist bug. (Or if someone wants to swap and adopt a bottle, I'm happy to do that too.)

Personally I think we should get the 77 - i noticed that both Ancient and Modern and Roberson Wine have some in stock so would be happy to stop by there to pick some up. If WS1 would let us group-adopt his 82 at £20, would that work?
Alternatively my 63 should not be in pink: Alex - let me know if you want to withold your semi-pink.
I wouldn't mind giving the 91 another go if we want to add another bottle or if someone else joins and needs to adopt. I have some in bond that could come out if we decide soon. I would also be interested in trying the 09 if it needed to be expanded yet further!

Re: Mon 16 January 2012, The Bunghole
Gents,
Being a Monday should make this relatively easy for me but I need to wait until we are back home before I can consult a family calendar and confirm. The same locational challenge also means I am not certain what I can contribute, but I think I have a bottle of Croft 1960, given to me by my father in the last year or so as a Christmas or Birthday present. Assuming the answer to both questions is yes, I think that and a Roeda 1967 are the only contributions I can offer.

It would, but may not be necessary given that JDAW is yet to add his bottle to the lineup. We may be able to prevail on him to acquire the 1977 since Ben (if he can join us) might be able to offer the 1960.RAYC wrote:Personally I think we should get the 77 - i noticed that both Ancient and Modern and Roberson Wine have some in stock so would be happy to stop by there to pick some up.
