Wed 2 May 2012: An invitation from Johnny Symington

Post by DRT »

Johnny Symington called me today to invite :tpf: members to taste a new Port that is about to be launched through Berry Brothers & Rudd.

A small quantity of Graham 1952 Single Tawny is being released to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Johnny has asked me to organise an informal tasting on Wednesday 2nd May so that he can bring along a bottle for Port Forum members to taste.

The format of the evening will be our usual "bring a bottle of Port to share". I think The Bung Hole is the obvious choice as a venue but please feel free to suggest others.

Please let me know if you can join us.

Date: 2nd May 2012
Venue: The Bung Hole
Time: 18:30
Attendees: AHB, BMHR, CMAG, DRT, JDAW, JDS, PhilW, RAYC, RLC, THRA & WS1.
Ports: Graham 1952 Single Tawny + others yet to be determined.

Note: I have added the names of those who I already know will be in London on 2nd May to the attendees list. If you are one of those, please let me know if you cannot attend.

A warm-up event for my birthday then!

OK, count me in!

(I wonder how much they're going to retail it for??)

Oh no! Now the agonising choice to decide what would be suitable and appropriate to share with Johnny...

...anyone think a Fonseca 2001 LBV would be a good choice?

I suspected that would be the case as the launch is iminent so it would be crazy to miss the opportunity to show the wine to the trade.

Questions about start time: when will Johnny Symington be able to leave the BFT? DRT has proposed the usual 6½pm start time: will that be too early for this event?

I agreed the time with Johnny before posting. I also explained our normal approach to tasting all of the wines, making notes, scoffing bits of dead cow and then washing it down with what remains in our glasses. Johnny seemed general happy with that plan.

Sure. What needs to be done? Is this to be blind except for JADS’s colheita? How many extra slots, just in case?

Or is it to be sighted? In which case, who is bringing what?

I would suggest blind is the way to go.

One bottle each, with spaces for "Emergency 1" to "Emergency 3".

Can we also agree that in deference to our guest and his generosity in sharing a 1952 colheita with us, that we should not bring any other colheitas from the 1950's.

I shall be bringing some sort of red port!
