Re: Decanting for a tasting

Please post tasting notes, especially for the unusual — so most of all for the Pousada. Indeed, please post (and send to PhilW) multiple good pictures of that bottle.

Re: Decanting for a tasting

Fonseca 1985 benefits from a long decant. For F85 my standard is 24 hours.

It seems that even putting all my ’78s on the table is not enough to entice out you stay-at-home party-poopers.

I will cancel the B&F booking.

Re: Emergency Port, Tue 14 Jan 2025

I’m under-Ported. Aren’t we all. Which wasn’t a question. On my death row awaiting their moment are two pairs, Pt 99 and GM 99, and Mz 87 and GM 87, either or both pairs being available. Or something else if a more specific theme emerges. Proposed date is Tuesday 14ᵗʰ January 2025 , but that could ...

Vista Alegre and the possible abbreviation VA were discussed in the Port brand abbreviation thread, and that conversation has been reopened with a new suggestion of Al.
Decision:
VAl = Vista Alegre

Re: Port brand abbreviations

I would prefer VAl. For Valle Longo, VL is — for me — the obvious choice. I'd be happy with VAl and VL respectively. would accept VAl as an alternative. I think the best abbreviation here would be VL I don’t love the consensus, but it’s acceptable. Hence, unless there is strong cogent objection, so...

Re: Port brand abbreviations

I would very strongly favour use of VA over the suggested alternatives. VA. I'd have gone for VL (despite Vl) or VLn, but not strongly felt. We disagree. There are ten V’s, and only two each for A’s and L’s. For my palate there’s better distinctiveness in favouring the rarely-used letters ( Al , Lg...

FYI, this page mentions Vista Alegre 2000 (the abbreviation for which is being discussed).

Edit: decision, the deliciously pronounceable VAl00.

Re: Port brand abbreviations

Still not VP, never mind 3+ vintages of VP, so for me no fixed abbreviation. This page mentions Vista Alegre vintages 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2005, and 2000. And while at it, this page mentions Quinta de Valle Longo, vintages 2018, 2017, and 2011. My preference is Lg , but Ln should be mentioned, e...

Though VA is obvious, it is, as MigSU correctly wrote , “an unfortunate abbreviation”. Perhaps we should go in a slightly diff...

Re: 1896 Port - Unknown: Help with digging!

F85 is in a frustrating place right now, it seems. I realise that we have veered away from the original topic, but I so disagree that it must be answered. Fonseca 1985, cool-English-stored, is unambiguously wonderful right now. Maybe one in twenty is corked, but except those, just delicious, especi...

F85 might be the Port for which a long decant is most important: Audouze -style I remove the cork 36 hours before, and decant 24 hours before.

Was yours long-decanted?

I’ve had two fabulous F85s this season.
