Re: Trip to Los Angeles for a Magnum Port lunch from 1890 to 1970

Flight 5 20240224_114428.jpg Sandeman 1911 – Tregnum An interesting nice port. This was a little cooked and dry. I believe this was over decanted and would have loved to tried it, pop and pour. This had been decanted for over 4 hours at this point of trying. I did have a second glass from the decan...

Third flight 20240224_114524.jpg 20240224_114520.jpg 20240224_114515.jpg Graham 1960 Great nose, had a little heat in the middle with smoothing in the finish. Took time in the glass but the balance came through. A lovely start to the flight. Was a little surprised this was 1960 was tasting young. H...

Re: Trip to Los Angeles for a Magnum Port lunch from 1890 to 1970

Now for the main event (how can I bore the reader more before getting to the main event hmm?!) Wearing black tie (one of the few to follow the dress code) Cliff and I arrived at Wolfgang Puck, The Cut Restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel to find Don Schliff opening the magnums with quite some port t...

Trip to Los Angeles for a Magnum Port lunch from 1890 to 1970

As some of you are aware, I was super generously invited to a Magnum Port lunch, hosted by Don Schliff, at Wolfgang Puck, The Cut restaurant in Los Angeles, with the magnums dated from 1890 to 1970. How could I say no to this? Me + Magnums + Lunch = YES, YES, YES ! I arrived at T5 for breakfast in t...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

Voting D77 TH, this was spilt 4 who thought that the decanter made no overall difference, and 3 who prefer the ships decanter. time wise, 1 for 2hours, 2 for 3:30 hours, 4 for longest time. W77 TH, magnum decanter was the favourite, all but one preferring the longest decant time D77 Magnum, the ship...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

General Bottles for some fun drinking as we go Warre 1947 , This was a low shoulder bottle, but very enjoyable, didn’t take long to open up. It had that classic Warre elegance, with lovely balance. Started to go over a little after 3 hours for me. got 2 HM’s. Buttler Nephew 1947 , opened at 1:30pm,...

Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

After some crazy planning and 2 trips to the Boot & Flogger, to deliver bottles and then more bottles and decanters, somehow I got them there all safely. There was a little Julian and Harry debate on which bottles to open and which decanters, Martin was the peacekeeper. The poor placemats didn’t...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

Apologies but I will now be tied up with a new business proposal and so, won’t be able to attend the lunchtime part of this tasting but should still be able to make the evening if that can be accommodated? Assuming so, I will have my new usual: Welsh Rarebit Steak (M/R) fries and carrots with peppe...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

DM is to go into 2 magnum decanters TH to be split into Sandeman tawny bottle, Straight and Ship's with hopefully 650 to 700 ml in each, the same setup for each Tappit Hen. I'm thinking of splitting the group into 2 maybe 3 groups for the Tappit Hen's only. we need to have ideally 4 to 5 rounds over...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

so looking at bottle lineup, DM i'm debating between a Taylor's Special Wood Port Vintage Character, or 2007 Portal Grande Reserva Douro red wine. 2 Tappit Hen's, Dow 1977 and Warre 1977, plus maybe a Warre 1975. Drink up leaker's (this is still to be added too) BN47 Cr55 N55 (very low fill) T66 GM79
