I am in favour of flat fee structure. I have not had the nacional but would be interested to try it.

2018 Quinta do Mourao (S. Leonardo)

1 hour decant 98% inky black with a glorious crimson rim Nose of cool blue fruits with a distinct herby garrigue prickle from the aguardiente Palate cycles from absolutely masses of blackberries at first, through blackberry and apple pie with a nice sugar-glazed shortcrust pastry, to Lindt 85% on th...

Re: Ruby Port Tasting - Date TBC - B&F

@Julian - I think a decent sized rat could do breast stroke in your Graham's LBV 2015 lake @ Alex - yes £40 is much too rich for us ordinary folk, and the wines too rare. @ Jacob - yes separate. The idea is to taste blind the things one can buy in the shops, which has wider value than just this comm...

1970 Offley Boa Vista

24 hour decant. A fine deep ruby. Nose of crushed herbs, star anise, cherries in kirsch. Lovely smooth mouthfeel, blood orange, red cherry, cinnamon and star anise again. The very faintest warmth, late, with a hint of allspice. Delicious port, perfectly ready. From same case as previous bottle repor...

Ruby Port Tasting - Date TBC - B&F

Is what it says above. You can bring a port you already have but it must be, or have been, available at retail (not necessarily in the UK) in 2023 for the equivalent of £16 or less. When you sign up, say what you are going to bring. We will do this single blind (so tasting sheets numbered 1-14 with ...

Re: Anyone interested in a Six Grapes Tasting?

Have we done in the past decade a 'basic port tasting'?

With the bar being set at current retail of say 16 quid?

It might not be massively enjoyable but it would be illuminating.

1991 Vesuvio

Pop'n'decant'n'pour after an absolutely miserable day that made me want to become an atheistic anchorite. Pristine bottle, wax seal over foil. Contents no more than 70% opaque. Unsurprising hint of heat on nose given minimal decant, but it's mainly maraschino cherry there. When given a good slurping...

Re: NV Cockburn Special Reserve

It may be rose tinted spectacles but I do remember the Cockburn Special Reserve being more than merely 'quite pleasant' about thirty five years ago. But then, as I recall, it cost about £6. The equivalent price now would be about £17 rather than the £12 Tesco have it for.

1987 Taylor Vargellas

The 1980s thread having been bugging me a bit I thought I would give this one another run out. An attractive full deep garnet at the rim. This is very nice port. But. Mercifully cool blue fruit on the nose, lacking that Taylor hotness. I think the palate lacks a bit of confidence. Almost but not qui...

2016 Quinta do Mourao (S. Leonardo)

Pop and decant and pour. Given 20 minutes. 99% opaque red juice. Violets, red Concord grape juice, esteva, chocolate on the nose. Full rich sweet mouthfeel first. Wash of roasted South African plums next, the skins prominent. Mid palate, late palate, and finish really savoury and meaty, dominated by...

Re: 2017 Quinta do Mourao (S. Leonardo)

+ 23 hrs

More violets on the nose.

A bit more blackcurrant heft on the mid palate.

Still remains a cool port although there's a bit of star anise warmth at the end of the finish now.

Maybe this will last longer than my snap prediction, although this bottle won't...

NV Quinta do Mourao Tawny 10YO (S. Leonardo) (bottled 2022)

A full rich red. Looks quite attractive.

Overwhelming sugary nose. So much so it is not really possible to discern any fruit.

Sweet confected mouthfeel. No discernible acidity or bite.

I'm afraid that this does not suit my palate at all. It's going to be used for cooking.
