Re: 1985 Fonseca
I've always had this wine, the 1987 Vargellas, and the 1985 Graham as my top 3 from the 1980s. It's a fabulous wine and will likely out-live all of us. I'd swap the '83 Graham's for the '85 Graham's, but you can't go wrong with either. I'd also throw the '86 Graham's Malvedos into the mix. I'd rank...

Re: The 1980s & quality
The '86 Graham's Malvedos is one of the best Ports from the '80's. Not the best, but certainly in the Top 5 IMHO. The '83 & '85 Offley Boa Vista are very solid Ports.

Re: NV Quady Starboard Batch 88
I just came across a small stock of this at a B&M in South Jersey. Halves were going for $14 and a 750ML bottle was $28. I opted to buy a '97 Smith Woodhouse there instead. By the looks of the bottle it doesn't look like they had budged for a good 15 or 20 years, so it will be there if I swing b...

Re: 1982 Taylor LBV
When I was referring to structured Port I'm really talking about any typical Ruby style Port that is drinkable. What I've found with LBV's that have a lot of age to them is that they seem to have lost their structure and yet they're still good. They've pretty much have lost their tannins and althoug...

Re: 1982 Taylor LBV
I assume this was filtered like their late versions? I've recently had their 1992 and 1994 LBV's and although they were filtered, they were both very good all things considered. The other thing I find with LBV's that have about 25 or more years on them is they to me they seem to "break down&quo...

Re: 1992 Fonseca
The '92 Taylor's is a spectacular Port. I like it better than the '94, but you're right, the price is disproportionately higher than the '92 Fonseca.Christopher wrote: ↑00:33 Fri 30 Dec 2022 A port to add to the cellar for sure. Particularly when better priced than the Taylor

Re: Bottling dates on LBVs (& others)
The last two LBVs I’ve tried—the Messias 2016 and Quevedo 2017—were at opposite ends of the quality spectrum but neither, as far as I could tell, included a bottling date on the label. I appreciate that a bottling date is only really essentially for buying colheitas and almost every producer bottle...

Welcome Michael. I shall look forward to meeting you at the Quevedo tasting next month. Btw… don’t let the Maths put you off. There are some very talented mathematicians among the members, and I would venture that they have discovered an equation that proves you can never ever have too much Port! W...

Re: NV Rodrigo Tawny
Regulation was lowered for certain categories of ports, forgot which. QH is not dead as a brand, it’s been put into hiatus (easiest way to explain). I could think of a few scenarios to use QH as the producer. - don’t want SFE listed on label - keep QH used to prevent various loss of rights related ...

Re: The 1980s & quality
Getting back on topic, two more (that I don’t believe have been mentioned thus far) to add to the 80s pantheon: the too rarely seen Ni80 and the RP82 (which I think is better than the 83) Can attest to the quality of the RP82, opened two bottles recently and both were quite pleasant to drink. I'm g...

Re: This year's tasting with my college buddies.
There are some bottles in that line up which should have been great Ports. The 1937 Noval has a huge reputation (although I prefer the Noval ‘68). The Kopke ‘44 can be stunning and the Graham ‘94 is one of my guaranteed go-to Ports. Your college buddies are very lucky people! They all were great Po...

Re: This year's tasting with my college buddies.
Some unusual bottles from unusual years: very interesting. All genuine? I bought almost all of them from auction from reputable auction houses (Zachy's, Ackers and a few others) and acquired them over the past 4 years. Of course bottles can be faked, but I looked them over pretty closely and they l...

This year's tasting with my college buddies.
Every year me and a bunch of my college buddies get together down at a beach house for a weekend. Lately it's been the weekend after our holiday called Labor Day (Labor Day is always the first Monday in September. As usual, I brought the Ports. I decided to bring 1 Colheita from each decade from the...
