Re: Bottling dates on LBVs (& others)

@JacobH, is there a code on the back label perchance - something beginning with L folllowed by a string of numerics? If so please post a photo and we'll see if we can determine the exact bottling date from there...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

... and there I was feeling rather smug when I snaffled a single Graham’s 20-year-old dumped in my local Waitrose from £39.99 to £20 enjoying an additional 25% discount during their recent wine promotion. I also recall lifting the Fletchers’ 40-year-old for, IIRC, £34.99 earlier in the year but a qu...

Re: Latest buy

Not even a shelf label at my local Sainsbury's, just the Malvedos. The nearest one I can think of that might range Graham's Crusted is Camden but given the location I expect it will have been cleared a while back - still at £10 might be worth a look. Another possibility might be Hendon. Failing that...

Re: Portuguese Wines Dinner, B&F Tuesday 14th June 2022 - POSTPONED

I have two of São João Porta dos Cavaleiros Dão Tinto 1980 - allowing one for backup. Of the six purchased at auction in December 2017, four have so far slipped down a treat. As before I'm generally available on Wednesday and Thursday evenings...

Tensioning tool repurposed

I found this tool to be very useful for removing cork remnants where the corkscrew has partially pulled out the cork leaving a hole. Pass the tool down through the hole and pull the rest of the cork out. Hope this makes sense. Product available from Mighton but I would imagine any outlet that sells ...

Re: 1985 Horizontal - 16 March 2022

I'll be eating at work (hospitality) so haven't placed an advance food order. Am assuming we'll be able to order food on the night should additional ballast be required . I'll stand up the OBV plus two back ups tomorrow then open and double decant a single bottle on the morning.

Re: 1985 Horizontal - 16 March 2022

I'll bring the OBV, then. I've not got round to trying it before as it will be from an unopened OWC in the cellar . I'm happy to bring one of my other bottles by prior arrangement. I'm assuming for this vintage we'll all be following the double decanting guidance?

Re: 1985 Horizontal?

Yes, please - I have the "LTSB" range (excepting Sandeman) as well as Dow's, Noval, Cálem and others (tbc). As it happens this vintage is most widely represented in my cellar so I'd be loathe to miss this horizontal - dates are good too...

Re: 1955 Taylor

In the late mid to late 90's I picked up a three-bottle lot of unlabelled VP - believed Taylor's - from one of the London auctions houses, most likely Christie's. At a family reunion and in the presence of a brother-in-law claiming Taylor's heritage I decided to take the plunge and open a bottle. Gu...

Re: NV Asda Reserve Port

This seems more like a "reduced to clear" than a "special offer" where the price will revert e.g. the recent Graham's LBV promotion. Often retailers and suppliers will agree a promotion but in this case it appears to be no longer ranged so the supplier won't have a say. Also in t...

This topic reminded me that a bottle of Fletcher's 40 Year Old Tawny Port (Aldi - Barão de Vilar) sold at an UK on-line auction earlier this week. Although it's showing as no longer available from Aldi it might be a seasonal range.

Kopke 1995 vintage port TN?

Greetings I've had a trawl through the encyclopedic TPF tasting notes and have not as yet unearthed a TN for Kopke 1995 vintage port. Looks like the house is more renowned for its colheitas so perhaps this is the reason as well as the house declaring a 1994 VP. As I recall, but can't evidence, it wo...

Thanks for clarification, @winsecretary. The reason for my asking was the degree in similarity between your thorough TN and my impression over two days. This seems quite remarkable given as you say bottle variation which is to be expected at 35+ years in bottle. I'll be leaving my OWC and loose bott...

Something I have never understood about the wine fridges is why when they have solid doors do they tend to be horrible fake wood or a really dark colour? Re: Wine fridges

Yes, indeed - if there is ever a possibly that the cabinet will end up indoors and visible, i.e. a feature, then glass is the way to go. As it happens mine was destined for the cellar so I wanted a solid door. Probably one of the reasons I got it for a such good price. Anyway, if you may sell in the...
