Re: Hello from Porto
Thanks for the tip about Lado, Alex. Despite my tardiness in responding here (in part because we took a few days’ excursion to Portalegre for my wife’s residency permit appointment), I did go by there last week to check it out. Encouraged by the listing of their opening at 11 a.m.—a refreshingly civ...

2016 Valriz
Purchased for something less than €40 from the store at R. Fernandes Tomás 145 in Porto, across the street from Kentucky Fried Chicken. My project of sampling vintage ports from Porto’s neighborhood grocers continues. I took a few sips from this bottle immediately after decanting, just to establish ...

Re: 2012 Quinta da Revolta
They do indeed! And you’re right, “Reparaçao de Telemóveis” it says on their card. With this purchase, I might have exhausted their stock of vintage ports, but a fair selection of tawnies and rubies remains.

2012 Quinta da Revolta
Purchased at Tech Hut (sic), Rua Catarina 606, Porto, for €34.95 There is no passage of light at the wine’s center, but more than a smidgen of clarity at its rim. Discernible color is limited to a uniform deep red. Cathedral windows fall rather quickly into picturesque ruin. It could be that the wan...

Re: Hello from Porto
Very kind of you, MigSU! And yes, you’ve got a felicitous part of the globe here that I feel very lucky to share. As for the forum, the plunge you describe is an apt way of putting it, but welcomes such as yours have me inclined to say “come on in, the water’s fine!” Many thanks.

Re: Hello from Porto
Thanks for that caveat, Glenn. Of the several reasons this quest for mediocrity might be ill-advised, the one you posit is likely the most compelling. In addition to being drawn by the novelty of the corner store offerings, I do view this as a project of eventually working my way up into vintage por...

Re: Hello from Porto
Thanks, winesecretary! It is, indeed, a perfect 18°C here in the granite city, with seagulls cavorting on the thermal updrafts. I don’t mean to engender envy, as is often done, whether inadvertently or by design, on social media (among which I suppose a forum such as this might justifiability be cat...

Thanks for that gracious welcome, Will. I offer this first note with no little trepidation! ‘Looking forward to learning more, from the wine and the forum.

Hello from Porto
Greetings all, I am a retired academic librarian from the United States who has relocated to Portugal. My wife and I are here on preliminary residency visas, and hope to obtain permission for permanent residency in the coming weeks. I am a rank novice when it comes to port. In contemplating our move...

2008 Quinta do Crasto
Bottle purchased at Mercado Sto. Ildefonso in Porto for €45.20. The wine is a very deep purple, abruptly transitioning to brown on the barest edge of the circumference of its surface. It is utterly opaque. Its aroma is restrained, but suggests a piquant, citric acidity. Any notion of oranges or lemo...
