Ruby Special Reserve Drinking Window?

As a little experiment I recently bought some old bottles of Noval LB (Brightwells for those wondering). I was interested to see how they tasted after something like 50 years in bottle (there is no bottling date but labels/bottles suggest 1960s or early 1970s to me). I just opened the first bottle. ...

Re: Tastings (Physical & Virtual) - Planner

A question raised elsewhere, that probably needs asking here... Should we be thinking about a 1945 @ 80 tasting next year? Do we have sufficient bottles? Would it be prohibitively expensive? Full event for 14 or smaller event? If we want to do this then I'm happy to organise. I appreciate it is a l...

Re: Single Quinta

I also really enjoyed reading this. Thanks. I too have never tried the 1970 and guess I never will seeing that the only price I could see on Wine Searcher was £2k. I also went back and read some of the older articles. A great way to spend a hour on a Sunday morning. It also left me wondering if ther...

Re: Festive Drinking 2023

We have actually had our 2 main Christmas lunches already as we are heading overseas for Christmas and New Year: Lunch 1: Krug NV (c.2011) - very deep yellow colour, full nose and palate. Great way to start things off. Tickeridge 2014 Classic Cuvee - not Krug but a very good English sparkling Danbur...

Re: An Evening of Port with the Symington's, Tuesday 28th November at BBR and Friday1st December 2023 at 67 Pall Mall

I attended the BBR tasting. The evening ran approximately like this: 615-7 White port and tonic pre start 7-730 Charles Symington presented about the company, the wines etc (I saw some of these slides last year but the presentation was different). Everyone stood and watched this in the upper level o...

Ah ok that makes sense. Apologies. I will check the closing price post auction as I guess that might give me a fair indication.

Re: Port for sale at auction

Roriz 1921? Just looking at The Saleroom and a bottle of Roriz 1921 is listed by Hartleys Auction House. I have never seen a 1921 and cannot find anything to support this being a genuine bottle. Do people think this is genuine? https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/hartleys/catalogue...

Re: Wine Quiz

I think I got 4/10. I should have got one more if I had thought a bit harder but it is what it is. I had a couple of close misses (well I thought they were close) and a terrible champagne guess. This was fun to play - thanks.

Re: Tue 12 Sep 2023, 1966s

Wonderful port tasting. Thank you to everyone who made this happen and for being so welcoming to a relative newbie. The standard of the 1966s remains consistently high and, for me, preferred to the 1963s overall. It was quite tricky to award points at the end as 7 or 8 really were quite close. In th...

Re: Unusual Shaped Port Bottle

The capsule was too damaged to read. It says something like ‘Hope and ….’ but that was really all I could work out and could not find anything in any books. I guess it is a UK bottling. Yes this was the one from an auction earlier this year. It was a bit of a gamble given the capsule but turned out ...

Unusual Shaped Port Bottle

I opened an unknown port bottle at the weekend for a family birthday. It turned out to be a 1927 Dow’s in terrific condition. What I found interesting was the bottle shape. As shown in the picture, it has a flat side. I have not seen a port bottle like this before and wondered if they were common ba...

I have Fonseca, Taylor, Graham and Smith Woodhouse. The Smith Woodhouse (Wine Society bottling) was a 1 bottle auction purchase so cannot vouch for provenance but would be an addition to the list above.

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Nickolls and Perks sale has gone live this morning. Quite a wide selection of ports and other wines on sale. No crazy prices but some very fair ones. Their website has clearly not been set up correctly as some of the discounts are not reflected in the price but I assume they will correct this later.

1971 Taylor Colheita

It is not easy finding good port from your birth year when it is 1971. This is by far the best I have tried. A fabulous port with plenty of orange, apricot and nuts on the nose and palate. it is very smooth with fabulous length. A port to sip and savour. If you are a 1971 baby, I suggest this is you...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

I am amazed what a terrible website Harvey Nichols has. I ordered some wines on Saturday and they have now messaged me to say they do not have all of them. The prices were great but the platform needs a lot of work. Feels like the sort of experience you’d get 20 years ago. Rant over!

Christmas Day with the family. There are a couple of wine lovers in the group but most have only a passing interest, despite my efforts. We started with a bottle of Hattingly Valley Classic Cuvee. Good quality fizz to kick things off. Next we opened a magnum of Simpsons Q Class Chardonnay 2020. This...

Re: NEW DATE: Wed 14 Dec 2022 - Quevedo Closure Experiment

When I was added to the list, Alex suggested I bring something as I was the person not paired on the list. I have 2 choices for interesting, depending on how interesting people want to be. Any preferences? The most ‘interesting’ is not a port but a 1990 Domaine Hillside Classico from Azerbaijan. On ...
