Re: Unusual Shaped Port Bottle

Interesting, it looks rather like an olive oil bottle with the flat side and color.

Personally I wouldn't overthink it, the world was so vastly different in 1929; there were more bespoke things happening in manufacturing.

Re: Whitwham's Bottler.

Not going to lie that is one cool bottle. The first Port harvest of the nuclear age.

The end of what one might call, "low-background Port."

Wow that's a strong result for SW and QH, will have to try some.

Shame RP83 wasn't served, iirc it has done well in the past.

Re: The 1980s & quality

I know 1984 was a bad year for Port, but I must say I rather enjoyed the '84 Graham Malvedos in the 84-92 vertical. A simple strawberry slurper, light but balanced. Not one for the critics perhaps, but I'd wager it would please most laymen. Definitely one to drink up soon.

Re: Please help me find a 1964 Dow Bomfim

Sten's site has a TN from 2020 for a 1964 Poças Jr. And there is exactly one bottle of it listed on CellarTracker (although that could be a misidentification).

For a fairly rare VP like all these, best bet is probably to call the winery itself and maybe a few large PT retailers/distributors.

Re: Filtration

That's amazing research. Are these stainless steel 75μm filters or nylon or what?

If you have a specific stainless one to recommend, please do so.

Re: 2020 Declarations

In the US, sales taxes are virtually never included in a given price, so you should always tack on an extra 6% or so. In this case, it's NY state, my recent invoice from them added 8.3% to the final price with BP (this tax varies a bit by county, but is around 8% for NY state). For the sake of prese...

Re: 2020 Declarations

For what's it worth, that GST lot was an Oct 13, 2019 hammer for 6 bottles for $1606 (BP included). Original Estimate then, $750 - $1,100.

Re: 2020 Declarations

If it was Euros it'd be even cheaper! I do hope the new rates start making a difference in the retail prices here, even if there is some lag. I particular, I noticed you can buy regular unaged white ports for only ~7 EUR and LBVs for 11-15 EUR in Portugal but here it's $14+ and ~$20-25, respectively.

Re: 2020 Declarations

Release prices for top-tier VP in the US have been in the $80 to $100 range since at least the 2011 vintage, and I think all the way back to 2007. SQVPs and second-tier labels have been $60 to $80 during that same time. That's interesting. Not many '11 lots hitting the auction yet, but I'm almost f...

Re: The 1980s & quality

Amazingly thorough post Glenn, I love it. After reading your comments about it being 90% corked, I saw a 12-case of the '83 Cockburn go for $685 at auction last week and the first thought that popped into my head is that I'd rather buy a $685 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible at auction. It would pr...

Does anyone have the final scores of these or which ones they liked best?
