I serve them at cellar temperature, can be a bit cooler but don't take it down to 0K like you normally have it in the US. I like pilsner and some other blond beers best at around 4-6C (39-43F). I prefer the darker ones a little less cold, say 8-10C (46-50F). Often the brewer will advise an optimum ...

Vista Alegre LBV 1996, bottled in 2002. "Traditional" and "unfiltered" are both to be found on the label. This port is in a dark brown (not black) bottle and has a cork. Bought for ┚¬ 14,50. I managed to snap the cork in two pieces while extracting it from the bottle. The oth...

I must say that - so far - I have had no bad experiences with BOBs produced by the Symingtons. Some of them even surpirised me. I can't say that of most of the BOBs by other shippers I've tried so far.

I don't remember the episode as a whole, just some specific details: - the actor Donald Pleasance and his way of speech; - wine storage (cellar??) with turned-off climate control in very hot weather to make sure tied-up half-brother dies during the weekend; - spoiling all the wine in the storage in ...

Any old port in a storm
Today, just out of the blue, I was thinking about a Columbo-episode featuring Donald Pleasance which I saw once, maybe twice, when I was a teenager (many years ago). In that episode Pleasance played a wine connoisseur who murdered his half-brother (plot summary here) . Even though it's the only epsi...

I think of Heritage as adequate, especially when it comes at £5 per bottle. I may even have suggested that it was better than the Warrior but it could have been an adrenaline rush caused by having a drinkable ruby for a fiver. The Heritage sells for ┚¬7 and the Warrior for ┚¬9 over here. I'...

That's an interesting point of view. But I wonder if a filtered port that has already undergone a lot of oxidative aging in barrels during many many years will still age perceptibly in the bottle. Personally I don't think a few years of difference between bottles will be noticeable, but I don't know...

In this post I compared two different 10yots by the same shipper. One of them was bottled in 2006, the other in 2007. An interesting thing is that there's also a 10yo Tawny from Conqueror, if that's as good as the Warre's Otima 10 then it must be really good value for money... I see another comparison coming... That comparison is now 88). Warre's Otima 10yot (┚¬12/50cl) vs Conqueror 10yot (┚¬12/75cl...

Here I compared this with a Conqueror LBV 2001.
I'm enjoying it right now. The one I'm tasting seems to be a bit more fruity and I didn't notice the heat (but I must say I didn't start until decant +2). Right now (decant + 3.5) it's indeed very enjoyable.

I've seen the term "bricking" being used several times now. What does it mean? Is it a reference to a "brick colour" and if so, what colour would that be? The colour of the old-fashioned rustbrown/reddish bricks?

Well Im not really sure if a 20-40.000 liter vat, which is averagely 25 years in service really leaves a tastable mark on a wine, but I leave it open to discussion. Axel That's probably the reason why LBVs are aged in huge vats instead of in small wooden casks. To be somewhat VP-like, the ageing ca...
