1996 Quinta do Portal LBV

http://www.bn-image.com/images/bn/100/119885.jpg I normally prefer LBVs to be young and powerful, with a few exceptions - and this LBV is a good example of such an exception. Decanted and drunk right away. Colour faded to brownish red. Nose and taste full of raisins and plum. Alcohol well integrate...

Re: NV Portal 20 Year Old Tawny

It lacks acid. It gets fat and sweet without the much needed acid to balance it. Compared to e.g. the Sandeman 20 year old tawny, this simply doesn't have the structure to be very intersting.

1998 Rozes VP

Pleasing and smooth, showing few tannins. A bit of alcohol in the finish which actually wasn't too bad. It didn't seem to have closed down. It's priced in the LBV price range and fits nicely there. I think it has a good QPR and could be used for everyday drinking. Would I buy it again? Perhaps. Quaf...

Re: 2001 Borges LBV

It's unfiltered by the way and already showing significant sediment. Pricing is in the upper segment.

I'm just finishing the bottle now and it's not too bad, although the alcohol is still burning tongue and throat a bit.

Would I buy it again? No. Would I drink it again? Yes.

2001 Borges LBV

No decanting. It's subtle and smooth and doesn't really point in any particular direction with alcohol being the only thing standing out. I prefer LBVs to be powerful, an explosion in the mouth, full of fruits. This one isn't but it actually isn't too bad and not too good either. It's not overly swe...

1990 Pocas Colheita (bottled 2007)

1990 Pocas Colheita [b. 2007] Bought about a year ago for €13 (down from €20) at a local supermarket. It's boring. Too sweet both in taste and mouth feel, lacking that fine touch, alcohol showing too much, too little taste and smell of anything and lacking some much needed acid. Even at this very l...

This is indeed the real deal. Chancellor is produced by Pocas, which is carried by on of the large supermarkets (Irma) in Denmark, but not the same as the supermarket that sells Pocas (Super Brugsen). This must be a marketing trick of some sort as Coop Danmark owns both Irma and Super Brugsen. It's ...

Okay, this one is too old for me, or even too young if you want a mature LBV. Most of the fruit has dissapeared and I like my red port young, strong and full of fruit! Even though the colour has fainted a bit it's still primarily red. The alcohol is showing too much, even after being open for some t...

Re: NV Chancellor 10 year old tawny

Unfurtunately, I don't keep drunk bottles. I'll have to look at a bottle the next time I see it in the supermarket. I can say that the label was very non-port like. Just a front label (IIRC) that was short and wide and with a "posh" font and design. If it has to look like that, I prefer th...

My local supermarket had this one on sale in December (for what used to be £8, at that time probably £12). Anyhow, it's one of the cheapest 10 year old tawnies I've seen (Kopke being among them). Price is important here as it isn't that interesting. Some of my friends really enjoyed what was left of...

I think this is the most boring LBV I've ever had. Too sweet, bland blend of fruit taste, too pleasing (but doesn't succeed), no structure etc. And it's not even among the cheaper ones. If I had more in my 'cellar' I would use it to make glögg. I bet the 6 grapes, which I haven't tried yet, is bett...

I've only had creme brulee with Port once, and the combo wasn't that good, although it wasn't bad either. I think it was caused by the choice of Port - a Portal 20 year old tawny. But I'm willing to try other combinations to see if this combo is indeed as good as it sound to me on paper :P

Do you ever drink alcohol to ease the pain when you're hung over? I know from myself that alchol greatly helps to remove some of the uncomfortness.
