Re: Re-wax that leaking bottle

Martin, Would you pm your mobile and I will Revolut you? I'm hoping Alex will collect my 1kg. I only need a small amount (500g max) so if anyone has missed ordering please feel free to take some of mine. If not too late, I’m happy to both pay for and collect Justin’s wax. I owe Justin some money so...

Re: Historic Ports from the Cellars of Raby Castle

Received yesterday from Paul Symington and posted at his request: Dear Alex, Derek and Andy, I hope that you well. The Port Forum may like to know of an extraordinary auction that is taking place currently at Christies London. The auction closes next Thursday 20th June. There are many bottles of Dow...

Re: 1977s, B&F, Tue 11 June 2024

This was a great tasting of 1977 Vintage Ports - none of them stank of TCA. I am coming to the conclusion that my introduction to this vintage 20 years ago was just unfortunate. At one point I was running at a spoilage rate of about 50%. Looking through my tasting notes I can see that now down to 10...

Re: single varietal

Hi Camille, The IVDP regulations do not permit single varietal Ports to be produced and released commercially. A few producers have made small batch, experimental single varietal Ports so they can follow them as these varietals age and, from that, understand how each grape variety contributes toward...

Re: Re-wax that leaking bottle

I'd be up for a kilo of a slightly weird colour - basically anything from 371C or below on the list.

What Martin hasn't shown you is that you can also use a John Bull printing set to stamp the name of the wine into the wax before it fully sets. I'll go and take a picture of one of them now...

???? Unknown (Alnwick Castle)

A bottle acquired from the cellars of Alnwick Castle. Unknown shipper and vintage, the wax seal was stamped "PORT", the cork was unbranded and the bottle appears to have been hand blown. I would estimate the bottle to have been made in the 1890s. A nice colour in the glass, deep gold with ...

Re: 1970 Taylor

Bottled by Grants of St James. A lovely mature bronze colour. Lively and fresh on the nose, full of fruit; fruit which delivers a lovely palate with just a little heat showing. Bruised apple, golden sultana merge together on the tongue to give a lovely mouthful of dried fruit. A warm aftertaste, inf...

Re: 1963 Taylor

Bottled in the UK by an unknown bottler. Opened at 09.00, decanted at 14.20 and tasted at 18.20. Mid-shoulder fill but with a good colour. Bronze red colour, 30% opaque. A little oxidised on the nose, causing the alcohol to stand out quite noticeably. Menthol lights up the palate, which shows only a...

Opened at 21.00, double-decanted at 23.00 and sealed with a vacu-vin. Bottled by Churton. Clean appearance, mature and 40% opaque. Dirty and unpleasant nose, perhaps a touch of TCA giving some bitterness to the palate. Not rated.
