Re: 1977 Croft

I have a few bottles at home which are going down in number. While I find this a Port which is fully mature, your description makes me think this was a sub-par bottle.

Mature red colour with more red in the tone that the Noval '31 or Dow '20 drunk alongside it. Lovely on the nose, even straight from the bottle, with lots of spiced dried fruit. Balanced palate bringing soft fruit and a nice freshness. Soft tannins hold the palate's attention at the edges of the ele...

A badly damaged label which read "Block, Grey & Block, by appointment to the late King George VI". The cork was clearly branded as Quinta do Noval 1931. A mature dark red colour with a lovely brick tone. Great nose of rich and mature sweet fruit. Balanced entry with fruit and tannin de...

Mid-shoulder fill. A wonderful dark colour; opaque at the centre and with a mature dark plum edge. A little unpleasant bottle stink on the nose which also taints the flavours in the mouth. The pair of the bottle opened at the 2016 event. The cork on this was more clearly branded and read "Davy's Crusted Port Landed 1977" so was presumably bottled in the UK. High neck fill in a bottle sealed with a yellow foil capsule stamped with a generic pattern. Dark red, mature appearanc...

Bottled by Crosse Brothers of Wells. Weevil damage to the cork made the final digit of the vintage impossible to read, but the characteristics of the wine lead to the conclusion this was the 1955. All that was clear about this bottle was that it was old, that it had been filled and sealed by Mitcheltomb & Co. The shipper and vintage was not branded on the cork, but the wax seal was original so the cork is presumed to date from prior to the time when branding started (which we estimate to ...
