Re: Informal Outdoor Tasting: St James’ Park, 17 July 2021

That’s understandable, if a shame! Perhaps other potential attendees could let me know if they are still keen for 17 July (with, of course, the possibility of a re-run in August if successful) or whether they would also like it to be put back?

Re: Informal Outdoor Tasting: St James’ Park, 17 July 2021

I am rather worried I have jinxed the COVID recovery plan by proposing this but we are still keen if anyone else is!

Re: DOC-bagging

I am desperately trying to eradicate my prejudices against white wine. Accordingly, in order to bag a Alentejano VR , I have quite a session with the wines of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova. Four whites and a rose unfortunately confirms all of my prejudices against white wine generally. The most interes...

Re: DOC-bagging

I also drank Algarve VR only once, a few years ago, at a cousin's wedding. It surprised me in how quite pleasantly drinkable it was - Barranco Longo Private Selection Red, a blend of Aragonez (Tinta Roriz) and Alicante Bouschet. I don't much care for Syrah, so I'm not surprised you didn't enjoy you...

Re: 2019 Symington Vintage Port Review

I don’t disagree with you about the importance of blending. It is also a notable that it can be used to criticise Portuguese and other less-popular European wines—sherry is a good example—but you never hear of similar criticism for the really popular blended wines such as Bordeaux reds or champagne....

Re: 2019 Symington Vintage Port Review

It was scored only the merits of its contents and not the label attached to it. I assumed that was the case, although I do think with a categorised wine like Port there is nothing wrong with scoring them by category Is there such a thing as a "full" Vesúvio declaration? To me, and based on price, a...

Re: RE: Re: 2019 Symington Vintage Port Review

Thanks: really interesting. That looks a bit disappointing for the Vesuvio as the only full declaration of the bunch, doesn’t it? Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? Haha! I suppose I was wondering if it was disappointing; the SQVPs were exceptionally good; or whether Andy might ...

Re: DOC-bagging

I have, but I'm from Portugal, so it's sort of cheating. I’m not sure I’d count that as cheating! I’d be surprised if many people have got the whole lot, especially some of the real oddities like Madeirense DOC or Carcavelos! How are you doing on sub-regions? Aren’t there about 10 for Vinho Verde, ...

Re: DOC-bagging

I start with the top and bottom of the country. A big-brand Vinho Verde DOC (probably Casal Garcia but I can’t quite remember) is as I always remember it to be: quite refreshing if somewhat bland. A Syrah from Quinta do Barranco Longo was a reasonably pricey bottle for an Algarve VR and really very ...

DOC-bagging

One of my aims for this year was to get more familiar with other wine regions of Portugal than the Douro. I am currently experiencing an opportunity to drink more Portuguese wines than I might normally have. 88) As a result, I thought I might see how many different DOCs & other regions I could “bag”...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

Fortunately this is the Aszu Essencia so is 7.5% - basically special brew 88) . It's surely just the same market as Sauternes - pairs with the same stuff? Ah. Thank you. I wasn’t aware that there was a difference between “Aszu Essencia” and “Essencia”. At those sorts of ABV / sugar levels I’m sure ...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

In the good old days, CMAG and I would occasionally lunch at Ibérica on Victoria Street. I would inevitably arrive before him and thoroughly enjoyed their range of about 5-6 different Vermouths available by the glass. That’s interesting. Vermouth seems to have a huge popularity in Spain: the last t...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

Quite often available through Laithwaites is the basic 10YO Penfolds Tawny wine. And through other merchants the Grandfather Tawny and Great grandfather editions which are quite pricey. There are plenty of other examples if you search them out. Yes. I was thinking more that whilst they are availabl...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

My point, just to be clear, is BRAND Ports brand image hasn’t yet moved into broad consumption. It is regarded as a mans after dinner cigar drink. And even then it competes in a staggeringly diverse array of other men’s drinks No one drinks those wines. Nor do they discuss them. They talk about the...

Simon and I will be reviewing the 93 aszu essencia from Royal Tokaji this weekend. We'll make sure to report. Since this thread is going in all sorts of directions, I hope that no-one will mind if I say this: I’m always intrigued by Tokaji Essencia since I have never quite understood who the target...

Re: 1977 Graham's Vintage Port for Sale

I enjoyed several bottles of the Cockburn Fine White last summer which is available in most supermarkets for about £10-£12 a bottle. It's off-dry and young but makes a very pleasing afternoon drink slightly chilled or you can have it with tonic water for a less potent version of a G&T. The Graham's ...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

I do agree with you that there are too many "investors" in wine and never plan to drink it. André Simon famously died aged 93 with only two magnums of wine left (plus, apparently, enough Château Latour 1945 to serve 400 at what would have been his 100th Birthday Party in 1970). We should all aim fo...

Re: RE: Re: Cruz Ruby Revisited

I’m curious that after the unfiltered LBVs (Noval, Niepoort & Warre) we have three rather average tawnies (Graham’s “The Tawny”, Warre 10 Otima & Cruz Tawny). Did someone let Glenn tinker with the list? Had that been the case, there would have been many more changes and they would have been of much...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

I understand your point of "a product is worth what someone is willing to pay for it", but I suppose I was never one to subscribe to that particular 'philosophy' (even though it's clearly a real thing). I own no VPs from my birth year, as it's a terrible, terrible year. Ideally I'd own a few bottle...

Re: RE: Re: On the hunt for a 93!

I know, but still......€400+ per bottle for a - at best - passable Port? Jeez. The supply is low so we have these inflated wine searcher prices. Keeping your eyes peeled they pop up for under €200 now and then. If you see the Quinta das Liceiras 1993 at less than €200 a bottle you have to be carefu...

Re: On the hunt for a 93!

They also bottled the 1992 and perhaps some others. The quinta is a vineyard that is part of Romaneira and is therefore similar concept to the few bottling of Qunita do Marco produced around the same time by Noval. Ah, interesting. VintagePort.se suggests the only other ones were a 1992 and a 2000 ...
