Re: Nacional - Myth or Magic?

I recently was faced with a choice, with limited funds available to me, would I like 1 bottle of Nacional 1966 or 4 bottles of Fonseca 1966. For me that's not even a choice. No question: 4 x F66 >>> 1 x NN66. What if you could find someone who was willing to pony up more then you paid for your F66 ...

Re: Nacional - Myth or Magic?

What we're really talking about here is marginal return. And for a luxury item like Port, everyone's marginal return is going to be different. I'm one of those guys who just can't get past the fact that, for the price of a NN, I could have had 5 bottles of some other excellent Port. Or an entire hor...

Re: Beijing 2008

I already tried to bribe him into coming to Seattle with a 1970 Noval Nacional! Though, sadly, it turns out the store accidentally accepted duplicate orders for the bottles so we won't be getting ours. I do have a 1963 Fonseca on order though... maybe he'll come visit if I throw in a 1985 Fons...

Re: Beijing 2008

I'm only upset about Usain Bolt because of how he finished the 100. I thought it was classless, and I feel robbed because now we'll never know how fast he could have gone. 9.65? 9.63? Could he have broken 9.6? As it stands now, his antics prevent him from being able to say that he ran the fastest 10...

Re: Beijing 2008

To be honest, that's hard to say one way or the other since total medals and gold medals have been equivalent sorting algorithms since the 80s. My recollection from watching is that total medals was always what the newscasts were talking about, but my recollection is not what it used to be. ...

Re: Beijing 2008

I contest this claim: "Before the Olympics started, golds were the standard being predicted, and to which importance was assigned. Hence, the results known, that is the standard that should be used." That is untrue. Golds was the standard being predicted in the same countries that are now ...

Re: Nacional - Myth or Magic?

Understood, and I agree. It's clearly an excellent Port. But is it 10x the Port of the standard Noval? Your WS ratings say no... it is "merely" twice the Port of the standard Noval. A question on WS though - do they rate wines blind or are they being affected by Ms. Hilton's fame when they...

Works for me. Others?
Sure, I'll buy that for $1.

It looks pretty orange to me (or in this case burnt orange), but I recognize the need for it to be distinct from TPF red.

Re: Beijing 2008

I would suggest that a fair scoring system would be 4 points for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. 3-2-1 is more normal, which results in the following (provided I didn't mess up the math, which I did in my head): Glenn, I was working on the basis that a Gold is worth at least twice what a Silve...

These are the Paris Hiltons of Port - they are famous because they are famous. Glenn, I think I would credit Nacional as having substantially more class than Miss Hilton  - can we compromise on Halle Berry? That's hardly a compromise, Halle Berry is actually a good actress! Re: What colour is tawny?

Yeah, it looks okay (but not great) on my home computer, but really looks orange on my work computer.

I think *** CC3300 *** is probably better. It still has a hint of orange to it (unlike *** CC3333 *** which to me is entirely red) but still retains some red as well.

Re: Nacional - Myth or Magic?

I suspect it is mostly - if not entirely - myth. Derek summed it up when he said "Nacional vintages undoubtedly and unashamedly are priced for a very exclusive market based on their rarity and history." Note that he did not say based on their quality. These are the Paris Hiltons of Port - ...

The current "tan" works well to me as a "light" color alternating with grey.

Re: Beijing 2008

Ah but the Olympics claim to have a different standard. Simply representing your country at the Olympics is supposed to be the ultimate goal. The medals are secondary.

Of course, the modern media won't stand for that, so we end up with this emphasis on medals and who is winning.

As I'm now looking at these on my work computer, which is a laptop, they look completely different. Again. On this computer (or more correctly, on this monitor) they appear much more orange than they do at home. Either CC3300 or CC3333 looks good on this computer. If my memory serves me well, which ...

Somebody should mention that we’re up for bronze. The BBC medals table shows the winners being — surprise! — non-Taipei China (they do have the most people); second being USA (having most money, albeit by a smaller margin than previously); and third place, with sixteen golds, the UK (perhaps beca...

Re: Glasses: what to buy; where to buy?

I hand wash my glass because there's rarely more than one in use, so it's just easier to go ahead and wash it than to put it in the dishwasher and have to wait. (Or, more correctly, end up with 7 of them in the dishwasher from a week's worth of drinking.) I do need to pick up a few more - a dozen ou...

I use the Riedel Vinum Port glass almost exclusively, and like Roy I have found them to be very reasonably durable. I have managed to break one, though - I was drying it by hand and applied too much pressure to the inside of the rim by using two fingers and a dish towel to dry the inside of the glas...

Re: Tax and Duty Comparisons

Most states only charge sales tax for items bought in a state where you are physically at. If you buy it over the phone and have it shipped, then there is no tax as you are not physically buying it in the state (makes no sense, huh?). Some states do charge sales tax no matter what and some don't. A...
