Is there such a thing as a "full" Vesúvio declaration?

To me, and based on price, all Vesúvios are SQVPs.

Re: 2021 Virtual Tasting #11 - Thurs 10th June - NOTE DATE CHANGE

By the way, Seattle to Carmel, CA is roughly the same distance as London to Florence, Italy. :-)

I've driven to visit Andy in L.A. before... that's the equivalent of London to Naples, Italy. And I did it in a smart car. :-)

Odd, because I am also online and there is no one else in the meeting.

I used the link from the original invite, is that not correct?

Re: 1990 Quinta do Vesuvio

Any Vesuvio before 1992 has to be at least somewhat suspect because they were stored in the Douro. I believe that 1992 was stored in Gaia, and for sure 1994 on has been. So to me, your note sounds fairly typical. The Douro bake isn't overt, but it's there. And those wines also age faster than the on...

I'd prefer to avoid the Niepoort - just too unreliable
I don't know what you're talking about. It's completely reliable! It is reliably tainted by VA so powerful that it bothers even me.

Poor excuse Glenn. You can use your phone. I’ve read that even California’s telecom system supports smartphones. Or is the truth that you will be too busy drinking fine mature vintages of Napa reds to make time for us. :-( Assuming it isn't on fire, of course. No Napa reds for me... in fact I've be...

What's the general mood about continuing these? How about once a month until the end of the year and we'll review then? If there's a month without much else happening we can always add in some extra events. I would love for them to continue as I'm unable to attend in-person events in London from Se...

Sounds like a very poor bottle of Ch85. Agreed. I bought a case of Ch85 after Julian introduced me to it (in Paris, as I recall), and my bottles have all been very nice. It isn't an astoundingly good Port even with the best bottles, but I've routinely rated it around 92-94 points. Its style is almo...

My reading of the rules: Anyone who wishes to attend and drink (hereinafter a "drinker") must have their own account here on TPF and sign up separately. Accommodations for industry guests to be arranged by the organizer (DRT) or his duly appointed representative (jdaw1). Others may attend as aids to...

Whatever you do, do not try to recant. You would be branded a heretic.

1993 Barbeito Sercial Manuel Eugenio Fernandez (MEF) Madeira
1993 Barbeito Malvasia Candida Faja dos Padres Madeira

I've heard the latter is pretty spectacular. Sercial isn't really my style, so I haven't looked into the former at all.

Re: Cruz Ruby Revisited

As it stands, it is woefully lacking in 100-pt Ports as rated by me. Also 99-pt Ports. I do note that the list does contain a single 98-pt Port, as rated by me: 1927 Niepoort. Sadly the list contains neither the 2017 Niepoort nor the 1863 Niepoort (technically a Garrafeira) which also received 98-p...

Re: Cruz Ruby Revisited

I’m curious that after the unfiltered LBVs (Noval, Niepoort & Warre) we have three rather average tawnies (Graham’s “The Tawny”, Warre 10 Otima & Cruz Tawny). Did someone let Glenn tinker with the list? Had that been the case, there would have been many more changes and they would have been of much...

It's not just Niepoort wines, either, it's anything they bottled. E.g. Broadbent VP from '94 and '97 is also a pretty risky buy.

I'm very sensitive to VA but it normally doesn't offend me, however even I find the levels in these wines to be offensive.

Underrated for sure Agreed. Note that Chris's and Andy's statements need not be contradictory. The worst Fonseca in a century can still be underrated if enough people spend enough time trashing it. It's a fine Port and I've liked it every time I've had it. But IIRC it's usually in the 89-90 range f...
