As much as I love Vargellas (I think it's my favorite SQ) I would hate to see it disappear from the regular Taylor's blend, as I think few things surpass a good Taylor's port. And I do think they need about all good grapes from Vargellas in the regular VP. BTW, so far in this decade, Vargellas was p...

Hmm, until now I had the hopes of life getting better in time. I was even prepared to live with my current status of Taylor LBV because I knew that something better was glowing on the horizon. Now I know that all good passes and things will get worse again. It's a depressing world we live in.

We are still thinking about what port to bring, maybe something from our own cellar or perhaps buy something there? Note sure... Thinking of a theme may help.

BTW, if there is anything that you guys like to taste from our portfolio just let me know. We are happy to bring some along.

Alright, more details are known now. We will definitely be available for the evenings of July 18 and 19. LadyR's course will last until around 5PM, so anytime after that we're available. Our hotel is the Radisson Hotel on Leicester Square, but I don't mind travelling a bit to go to a certain venue. ...

We'll be in London for the days, so a location in that area seems best. Crusting Pipe perhaps? Or another location if someone has a better idea?

Haven't tasted it for a while, but d'Arenberg used to make a decent chardonnay that was around ┚¬10 here. Another good one is Mulderbosch, which is around ┚¬12-15. And not chardonnay, but more or less in the same style and Portuguese (thus making a beautiful link to this forum) are Castello ...

Good books on port

I thought it would probably be useful to start a thread about good port books. Just to see how many there are (or we are aware of) and how they are appreciated. These are the ones that I have at home and enjoy: Vintage Port - James Suckling Although terribly outdated it is still a fun book to read P...

Chimay also produces a really good pilsener. It's called Chimay Doré and it's anly for sale at the Auberge near the abbey. If you are ever in the area, make sure to stop there for lunch or dinner. It's a great place.

BTW, just did google it. It gives my old bottlecount account. I haven't used or updated that for years. If you want to see my collection, go to Cellartracker and search for ronnieroots.

Full name Manuel D. Poças Jr., a Portuguese shipper, founded in the early 20th century. Traditionally good as a tawny producer, but recent VP's have been very good as well. Both the 2000 VP and the 2003 Director's Choice VP received 90 points from Wine Spectator and are serious ports. If you find ...

What's your favorite pilsener?

My all time favorite is Brand Urtyp: a hoppy beer with lovely aromas of flowers. Strong but refined.

Some good discounts

I was scanning the shelves of a Gall&Gall (=the Dutch version of Oddbins) and noticed that a couple of VP's had a 25% discount: Graham's 1997 (from 60 to 45), Dow's 2000 (from 55 to 41) and Passadouro 1999 (from 40 to 30). I was tempted to buy the Dow's 2000 when I spotted a loose bottle of Quin...

Recent vintages of Pocas VP: both the 2000 and the 2003 are available here for about ┚¬15. Especially the 2000 is stunning for the money.

Warre's Quinta da Cavadinha 1995 VP for ┚¬25.

Dow's Bomfim, several vintages are available for ┚¬13 for a half bottle or ┚¬25 for a whole.

I may be wrong, but as far as I know the rules are: you are only allowed to call it Quinta da/do/de ..... if the grapes are sourced from te quinta, but there is no law stopping you from giving the port another name without quinta in it. So as an example: Quinta do Crasto is allowed to call their VP ...
