Re: 1994 Tesco

So, nearly ten years on I have a couple of bottles of this in my cellar. I last opened a bottle on my birthday in December 2013, so I figured 10 years on would be good to see the evolution. Has anyone had any of this since this thread, and if so is there any advice for decanting time? I'm planning t...

Re: Identifying mystery port

Update: Despite seeming interested when I first spoke to him about this, my wine dealer was oddly reluctant to taste or take a sample of the wine - he gave it a quick sniff from the miniature bottle and said that it smelled good and was clearly a vintage, rather than a tawny, but beyond that no more...

Re: Identifying mystery port

I have a little left - the remnants of the glass in front of me (which is the sedimenty bit that I've put through a filter and is drinking fine) plus what's left of the decanted stuff which I've put into a 50ml Glenfiddich 15yr miniature and the empty "one-glass" supermarket wine bottle th...

Re: Identifying mystery port

UPDATE: I went back to the shop where I bought it to have a look at the other bottles he was going to bring in. I walked through the door and the shop owner looked sad and said "I've been dreading you coming in..." His son had left the two cases of vintage wine in his cellar. There was a s...

Re: Identifying mystery port

UPDATE: I've bought the two other bottles of port that the shop had, along with a bottle of wine (the only identifying feature is the "foil", which is red plastic and says "The Wine Society" on it) and a bottle of what I assume is whisky or rum made by "James Bell of Leith&q...

Re: Identifying mystery port

[Cue desperate search for junk shops in the Tyneside area.…] So, there were two mystery bottles in the junk shop, and you bought only one? Yeah, when I bought it I didn't know that the bottle contained port (just a suspicion from the shape of the bottle). I'm definitely going to open it and share i...

Re: London stop over

A trip to St. James is always recommended for the oenophile (and for the cigar afficionado). I doubt that anywhere would have a stock of '55s, but BBR, Justerini and Fortnum's are all worth visiting for the experience alone. A great way to spend an afternoon is with a bottle of wine from Berry's at ...

Re: Identifying mystery port

Unfortunately I can see the cork through the glass (after removing the wax to have a look) and it's unbranded. I thought perhaps the top of the cork might reveal something, but the wax is kinda integral to it and removing it would just peel off the top layer of cork, removing any branding anyway. I ...

Re: Identifying mystery port

Hallo Ladies and Gentlemen, I have finally got round to uploading the pictures, after a couple of impromptu nights out that I hadn't bargained for!# The pictures are on my flickr account at this link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/msmoynihan/sets/72157648971895399/ As to the questions you've all ask...

Re: Identifying mystery port

Wow! This is a much bigger response than I expected. It's a bit late at night now, but I shall post some pictures tomorrow evening. As to the Fonseca comment - I always saw it in quite bright green bottles a bit like the one at this link: http://www.hallarn.com/vpid/images/bottles/IMG_1332.JPG The g...

Identifying mystery port

Hallo all, Please can you help me with some details of an old bottle of port. I've just acquired a bottle from a junk shop, along with a bottle of Marquis de Terme from 1953, for which I paid the grand total of £5 each. The claret was in fine condition when I drank it last night, and I expect the po...

Re: Tesco Vintage Port 1994

Wow! I didn't realise that this board was so active! Thank you all for your replies, so quickly. I guess the one that makes the most sense to me is the replacement of the corks with more generic ones to hide the brand for selling as Tesco Finest, but surely that would be a fairly expensive thing to ...

Tesco Vintage Port 1994

Hi there, I've occasionally read the discussions in TPF before, but only just joined, as I have a question I'd like your expertise on. I purchased a bottle of "Tesco Finest Vintage Port 1994" by Symington for the astoundingly low price of £11.15. I opened it last night for a dinner party a...
