Re: Exhaustive list of fortified wine?
Basically any place in the US that has a winery has someone making a fortified wine.Andy Velebil wrote:Napa and the other wine regions in California
Finger Lakes wine region in New York
Pretty sure Oregon and Washington too

Re: 1995 Quinta do Vesuvio
The '95s as a whole seem to be entering maturity and, as I feel I always mention, can offer great value in the US for something in the "ready to drink" category.

Re: 2014 Weingut Schloss Vollrads Riesling Kabinett Trocken Rheingau
I've noticed Vollrads had moved to the glass closure on their more affordable bottles. Their higher end stuff isn't available locally, so I can't say if they did so across their range. I've never had a bad bottle sealed this way, and the handful of Finger Lakes Pinots and Rieslings I've aged over th...

Re: The Bunghole / The Bung Hole
With a long history as wine merchants, it is perhaps not surprising that the names of many of our bars are inspired by wine terminology. The Bunghole Cellars is our popular wine bar on High Holborn — so what’s in the name… A bunghole is a hole bored into a barrel and capped with a large cork-like o...

Re: Which LBVs are worth cellaring?
I was looking through the tasting notes on this site to see if there is an upper limit on the keeping qualities of LBV port. There are a few outliers (1927, 1958, 1961 and 1967) but it isn't until the mid seventies that there seem to be enough notes to give a clear picture of how they drink over ti...

Re: Which LBVs are worth cellaring?
While I was generally not a big fan of their LBV's in the past, the 2009 Taylor's LBV is excellent. Worth trying it. IMO and experience Taylor's/Fonseca have, in recent years, been improving the quality of their mid-range products (Ruby Reserves, LBV, and tawny's with an indication of age). If you'...

Re: Which LBVs are worth cellaring?
My trouble is that I associate LBVs with my wilderness years for port. Desperately awful wines which I am sorry to say Taylor still produces. There are good LBVs but they are not uniform. Taylor's LBV is aimed at a particular market. People who read and post on this board are probably not that mark...

Re: Which LBVs are worth cellaring?
I totally agree with the notion that there are many LBVs out there that can benefit from bottle aging. My personal favorites, in no particular order: Smith-Woodhouse Niepoort Crasto (partially because of its very attractive price) Noval (unfiltered) Warre (especially many over 20 y/o) Sent from my i...

Re: Is 30 a bad age for VP?
My conclusion is that port sulks from time to time. +1 I agree with this but just think there are so many factors to consider when attempting to analyse this subject over half a century or more that there simply isn't enough reliable evidence to pin the pattern of sulking down to specific ages. I a...

Mine were all Grocery Outlet as well. ~$25 for the 750ml and $10-$15 for the halves, when they had them. Only one or two vintages at a time, in no particular order. All the labels were this identical format/look: https://www.vivino.com/wineries/tuke-holdsworth/wines/oporto-late-bottled-vintage-porto...

A shame, I had pictures of a few relatively recent bottlings ('97, '99, 2000, '03 and '07) from ~2012 but it appears I've done away with them.
All were purchased from the same bargain grocery chain (I assume) Glenn procured his '80.

Re: 1972 Warre Colheita
What are the odds this was one of the "industrial alcohol" ports? Based on this: 89/100. I'd say approximately zero. I don't think that's necessarily the case. The industrial alcohol would have gone through taste testing before use and I've drunk a reasonable range of 1972 ports. I'm not ...

Not quite cooking but here goes. Garlic Port; Chop a pound of garlic, put it ...

Re: 2014: the TPF blend
While getting a bit away from the original idea of a 2014 VP, perhaps a more feasible idea would be to blend a special TPF edition tawny. I suspect a producer or two with whom you are friendly with would entertain a blending demonstration and bottle a chosen blend of your collective taste. That remo...
