Re: Replacing corks
We seem to be straying into the world of alternative facts. It is true that each toss of the coin or putting in of a cork is independent of the last, however this is irrelevant to the point I am making. If you toss a coin twice or use 2 corks you double the chances of getting a head or a corked cork...

Re: Replacing corks
You think so? I'd be curious to have that hypothesis confirmed LGTrotter, thought Interesting! My hypothesis being that if you have, say, a 1 in 20 chance of a cork being tainted in the general cork population then if you have put 2 corks in one bottle during its lifetime then you have a 1 in 10 ch...

Re: Port in movies, dramas and tv series
An excellent thread. I shall have a think about this. Coincidentally I watched 'Babette's Feast' last night which prompted me to buy some Clos de Vougeot when I first saw it years ago. As did Jeanette Winterson, I understand.

Re: Warre's 1970 Private Cellar release
I have seen 2016 release for Warre 1985 in Wine-searcher, but it is advertized at ~6X the price at other shops in Wine-searcher. What is so special about the special release? In respect of the 1970 the answer is nothing. Nada. Nowt. Presumably the keyword here would be 'provenance', overlooking the...

1977 Cockburn
I cracked and opened one of these. I thought that I could taste the new cork when I first opened the bottle. My other immediate response was that it could do with another ten years and it will be like the 1970. For there is a family resemblance, it is pale, slightly casky with cherries and rhubarb, ...

Re: Replacing corks
Are you saying that some corks in VP bottles are longer than in regular bottles? It seems to me that old bottles (and some new ones) have longer corks. I wish I had some to hand so I could show you pictures, but I would guess that the average bottle of plonk has a cork of about 5cm and I think that...

I found this note on the Quinta's website. It only acknowledges "The port forum", rather than the man himself. I found it strangely pleasing that these notes are considered worthy of quotation and an excellent note it is too.

I broke my duck on the 2011 vintage. Half a case of 2011 Quinta da Senhora do Convento at £24/bottle retail. I hope Alex is right about this wine, all I have to do now is live long enough to drink it.

Re: Replacing corks
I never think it is time to change old corks. If the cork has failed or looks like it might then drink the bottle. Old corks, especially the long ones, are like parrots in that they live forever mostly. I think old fragile wines really don't like being recorked. I wonder if they ever get over it.

2012 Quinta de la Rosa
Very much pop and pour, cellar cool which helps. Really delicious, soft and sweet with easy tannins. Quite light in the mouth with a touch of table wine in the style which makes it slide down all too easily. Very dark in colour with a thick presence in the glass. Lots of vanilla on the nose and some...

Re: Crystal ball
I would imagine that making port is a labour intensive business. The changes in working practice and conditions may account for some of the rises in release prices. However I do not really believe that prices have much correlation to production costs. Not much problem for the crystal ball to predict...

Re: Wine Fridge
I am going to not really answer the question because I don't know about wine fridges and I have a feeling they are not the perfect storage they are often touted to be. So my non-answer goes like this; surely within this two storey extension there is a wee nook which is located on the north side with...

Re: Crystal ball
I looked at some of the prices I was paying for 1970 ports around 2003ish. Croft 1970/£40, Cockburn 1970/£38 Martinez 1970/£35. And that is all in, from a shop a bottle at a time. I remember thinking that the bigger names, being over £50/bottle, seemed excessively priced. Oh for a time machine. The ...

Re: Crystal ball
This thread came up while the software update was being cranky and I thought that ten years later and halfway there would be a good time to think again about some of the issues. Well the 2003s do not seem to have romped away in price, even the good ones are available at less than the release prices ...

One further thought on the Wine Society 83s; they have been recorked. I will probably leave mine a year or two as I think this can take a while to settle down.

Re: Latest buy
Thanks for the heads up, I've bought 6. I've been buying 85s and 80s rather than 83s and I keep wondering if it is a mistake to have so few of the 83s. Will they come good over the next decade or so, and could I be missing out on some great wines? No problem. I hope they turn out OK, a lot of revie...

Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame
A 1996 Quinta do Vesuvio was mute on first pour and confirmed as corked by the better half. With port stocks in the Aussie cellar dwindling, this was a very sad turn of events. Thankfully the first of six to disappoint, with six still to go. My condolences. A bit warm for port this time of year isn...

Re: How to serve a G70
Always wear a tall hat when port tasting. It is by this, more than anything you will be judged. But seriously, I must vehemently disagree with some of the above; never, ever, ever use any kind of paper filter on port. The sludgy bit at the bottom should be used for gravy, or more appropriately poure...

Half a dozen 1983 Wine Society Exhibition port. I have next to no 83s and they are £44/bottle all in on the January clearance list. This seems more achievable than some of the more fanciful notions I have been having of late.

... I'd have murdered the lot of them, starting with Harriet. Rather a harsh critique on poor Harriet Walters' efforts in the 1987 TV adaptation. Personally I thought she was rather good and played off Edward Petherbridge's foppish twit better than most would have been able to. I am with Daniel on ...

Here are my latest and only buys so far (being new to the port community): 2x Graham 1970, 1x Taylor flatmate 1985 (I am born in 85), 3x Fonseca 2011, 5x Dows 2011. And some tawny Andresen 10yrs white port and Ramos Pinto 20yrs to drink meanwhile! An excellent selection. 1985 is a good year to be b...
