Having just skim read this thread, I think we all maybe need to get out more. On the theme of linking scores and descriptions, I think that one of the few people who can manage both is Robert Parker. However baleful one may feel his influence or, perhaps, effect to be, his scores seem to be well con...

I know my views are old hat, but why score? Does one really buy a 92 over a 91? Do you refuse to drink the latter? Are today's drinker's so incapable of expressing themselves in clear English that they can better describe a wine by pseudoscientific numbers rather than words which convey the feelings...

Gentlemen (he said in his best Frankie Howerd impersonator's voice), I am disappointed with you all. You overlook a signifiacnt issue. The BBC has, quite disinterestedly I am sure, published the transacript of the judgment. Ms Mills claimed that she needed £39,000 per annum for wines notwithstanding...

Alan touches a previously unexposed nerve in commenting on the extent to which benefits from the port shippers trickle down. Wine production has traditionally involved crushing poverty and back breaking work, and probably in no region more so than the Douro. When we tasted our way through the 66s so...

Taylor's 63 was the port at a dinner I attended last night. I recognised features reported by Julian and Alex until it came to the aftertaste which, last night, was sadly not there apart from a slight bitterness. The wine was absolutely correct in every respect. Very upright, but it did not really s...

Continuing the thread on pricing
Taking as my text for the day, that the labourer is worthy of his hire (St Mark, I think), hence everyone has to be able to make a profit. Why, and this question is not rhetorical, must one pay such a whacking premium when eating out? It is notorious that one can drink local wine in France, to name,...

Airliner implies intercontinental travel; a cruise ship, travelling one continent, may be a liner, but is a liner a cruise ship? My preference is for aeroplane (just on aesthetic rather than etymological grounds). Does anyone fancy abolishing air travel and returning to the seas for any travel whcih...

Since the deeper undeground 66 horizontal I have been absent in more ways than one. However................. This week is being spent in Cardiff, one of the most frightening experiences of my life. If you arrive on a Sunday night at 10, and walk from the NCP to your hotel, don't forget the SAS train...

Laying down
Cruising on another port site (inter honestiores non nominandum) (no, not really), I see that Uncle Tom poses a question about the quantity of port being laid down. He asks, I think, that since business is cash driven above all else, where does that leave stock. My club has reduced stocks from aroun...

Whilst probably too tired to wax lyrical, my line up is Nacional, Dow then Fonseca. Thanks to those whose Herculean efforts made it work. Also, someone stuffed a funnel and some coffee papers in my raincoat pocket. I don't know why. Does the real owner want them back, and, if so, whither I shall sen...

What joy to find that someone else enjoyed Blaauwklippen! I used to buy their cab sauv. It was a pungent wine; had an odd cigar smoke finish. The wine maker was even more incomprehensibly named than his wine. I think something befell him and others took over his winery. A good snort, nevertheless, a...

This is something of a shock horror revelation. I suspect that Uncle Tom has hit upon the culprit in looking to the cheap 'n nasty continental market. Virtual paint stripper is sold in France as port; I doubt whether port which has had oak chips floating in the vats even hits the shelves here, or at...
