Re: 2018 Declarations

I have tasted this amongst others which I thought should be medal candidates for the vintage and it really stuck out.

Re: What was your first vintage?

For me it was a Fonseca 1977. It had the typical big paint marks on the bottle. It was early 90s and I was little experienced, so I told the importer about the appearance of he bottle and he appologised & sent me a new one, which totally looked alike. Great Port though and a fantastic start into...

Re: Vintage 2020

Charles Symington has put out a rather nice Harvest Report including temperature charts from Quinta do Bomfim which I am sure will appeal to Tom. This is fantastic. Thank you, dear Charles. It much helps to understand the Vintage better and will certainly give tons of arguments of foot treading of ...

I think you need to get rid of the 800 cases for Taylor, Alex. David just told me that they bottled 7.800 cases and the wine is a beauty (last part of the sentence was from me :-)

Beneficio and emergency measures of the IVDP

In 2020 the IVDP reduced the Beneficio by some 6.000 casks (x550 Liters). Additionally they have called for a 10.000 cask Quality reserve (last time put in effect in 1945 to reduced the risk of overproduction after WWII). Additionally the state is supporting the sector with some other issues such as...

Portwine Day CoverTPF.jpg Since many years 10 September is celebrated in Portugal and abroad with a (very nice) glass of Port – or two. Please join me in opening a decent bottle of Port and toast this to the many generations of people who made Port possible and so enjoyable – winemakers, famers, pr...

THE FLADGATE PARTNERSHIP PRESS RELEASE 2018 VINTAGE RELEASE On 23rd April, Taylor’s, Fonseca and Croft Ports – all members of The Fladgate Partnership - have, by tradition, announced whether they will release a Vintage Port and, if so, which wines they will bottle. Re: Vintage Port - Quo vadis?

I have a question first; What is the approximate percentage of total bottles that a typical producers retains after a release of a VP or SQVP? Is it 10%, 20%, more, less? Fantastic question. I do not think that many of the producers have a plan to have different badges of selling their Ports. With ...

Churchill Crusted Port Tasting 28 July

After having spent a night at marvelous Quinta da Gricha some three weeks ago with Churchill's winemaker Ricardo Nunes, I will defintely be there: https://churchills-port.com/lifestyle/explaining-crusted-new-virtual-tasting/ I believe Crusted Port is very much underrated and except Niepoort and Chur...

Vintage Port - Quo vadis?

I think everyone thought it cannot get more complicated than with 2015-2016-2017, but now 2018 is getting bottled and we have some who do not bottle, some who bottle Single Quinta, some full and some - at least - one major shipper to do both (for the first time ever?). Although many other wine regio...

Re: Port Shipped by Sail

Vale da Figueira Ports are ok, but not extraordinary. I dont see them benefiting from sailing to the UK, other than being exposed to heat and/or sun for some time.

They are a little higher than La Rosa on the same road. Owned by one of the Calem family members.

Re: Law of Two Thirds discussion

However, they were very clear that the law of two-thirds only applies to their sales of tawny Port and not to sales of VP and LBV. This would make sense if you look at tawny Port and the fact you need to have a good stock to be able to make quality blends. I'm not confident that the rules published...
