Re: Mon 19th Jan 2015, Fonseca at the Boot & Flogger

This was a great mini-vertical of Fonseca (plus guests)-a shipper that must rank as my favourite, simply oozing class. Shame there was no 63 on show (which I've still to try) but once again Charles and his F77 (or more especially the F77-sorry Charles!) was in imperious form, although I was rather t...

Re: Tasting events in the next 3 months

Anyway there is apparently a Fonseca bicentennial tasting the night before the BFT and I for one would like to know why our excellent contacts within TFP wouldn't extend a few invites to that. Are you suggesting that a theme for our tasting on May 3 should be "The Best of the Fonseca Bicentenn...

Re: Mon 2nd March 2015 - Henry Shotton visits London

For the sake of full disclosure I should also mention that I have said we will cover the cost of Henry's dinner between us in exchange for him coming prepared with tales from the vinous world. A very reasonable exchange. Hopefully Henry will be able to give us a steer on the prospects for the 2015 ...

Re: What producer should be our next vertical

As previously flagged up, I can also cover the Ck63, 67 and 70. There's also a purported bottle of the 1912 up for auction in Cardiff on 25 Feb, with an estimate of £300-£500. The 55s have also come up at auction a few times in the last year and so if a waiting game can be played, it wouldn't be nec...

Good price for BBR-equivalent to the retail price at ND John when I last bought the D97 there.

Re: Cheltenham

I will be there for the Gold Cup as I have been every year since 1989 (save for the Foot and Mouth) when I did have a decent punt on Desert Orchid. However, my days of spending most afternoons in the company of Joe (Coral) are long gone and so is my knowledge of current form- but not sure I'd be ris...

Re: What producer should be our next vertical

Agreed- a Ck and N double vertical seems more accessible than a Ni vertical. Of the former, I believe I can lay my hands on N58, N60, N66, N70, N82 and N85. For Ck, 63, 67 and 70.

Ok, I'll stick my head above the parapet first-these dates work for me in principal, although I have a feeling that Thursday's may not work for everyone.

Re: What would feature in the line up?

Unlike some on this forum I haven't yet had the opportunity to sample many of the venerable greats and so to now, I would side with T45, G70 (which I had a quite fantastic bottle of on Friday) and just to add another (more recent) to the mix-F77 (which I've never failed to be impressed with).

Re: Mon 9th Feb 2015, Boot & Flogger, Port from the 1970s

Potted Shrimps (v. good last time) and the Sirloin steak and fries done the Alex way (as he was impressed last time) with a side order of Peas and beans with mint lemon and butter. Any dessert tbd on the night.

Thanks

Right, after this tasting note, I am going to take up the kind offer of the D77 winking at me from my cellar and give the chap a second chance!

Re: What producer should be our next vertical

Like Phil-was going to mention Calem as a vertical has been on the stocks for some time (think I have the 63,77 and 83). However, if, as Tom has suggested, Warre is due a re-visitation then bottles are likely to be easier to source. Of the others mentioned, Offley would be quite interesting as again...

Well consolidated Phil and interesting to see the polar opinions on some. Methinks Derek has a little bit of a vested interest in 1965!

Re: Newbie With 24 or 48 Hours in Porto

Agree withy the previous advice-the super premiun tawny option seems best value and talking of similar, 'flight' tasting is the best approach in Vinolgia (particularly with regard to the aged tawnies/colheitas) as I know to my cost that simply buying by the glass can be expensive there ! Worth also ...

Re: Should I buy this 1945 Taylor's?

£600 is certainly a pretty penny to pay and that would be enough to put me off but having had T45 on my wedding a couple of years ago, I can confirm it to be fantastic juice, amongst the best I have ever tasted. It was also quite hardy having not beeen stored ideally by my father-in-law (who kindly ...

Re: 1985 Croft

Liked this Port and in other circumstances it might have the source of more top-ups. Very clean gentle fruit but lacking the broodiness of the T85 and the explosiveness of the F85 (both of which I sampled prior to this).

Menu looks good. My choices:

Potted Shrimp
Game Pie
New Pots
Peas and beans with mint lemon and butter

Requirement for dessert to be determined on the night (although the Treacle tart and custard is going to be severely tempting)!

Re: 1970 Gould Campbell

Daniel and I disagree on this-I felt the GC70 to a lovely fully mature VP (with that slightly brown sugary aroma), wheras the QH70 was rather thin and way past its best (whatever its best was).

Re: General query on maturity in half bottles

If the offer is still open (and maybe Alex could confirm?), I see that we could access and purchase GC80 in 37.5, 75 and 150cl formats. These would presumably have the same provenance as each other other and would therefore provide a consistent basis for such an experiment (incidentally, looking at ...
