Re: VWP and b.f.t. Quevedo tasting

I also will join this merry throng. A jolly good idea, and a chance to try some ports that I haven't.

Re: Taylor's Terra Feita Vertical

@ idj123 - first reserve, statistically very likely to be promoted. In truth I was surprised at the speed of responses. But it was a very nice bottle of port.

Re: Taylor's Terra Feita Vertical

@ nac - I have been aware of that L&W case for a while. I appreciate you reaching out to your contacts... @ PhilW - My intention was specifically not to cut across the contemplated TTF v TV taste-off, which is a worthy and serious and larger project, but, stimulated by the unabashed pleasure der...

Re: Taylor's Terra Feita Vertical

List extended to 14 persons. I don't want to fuzz the focus of this tasting by introducing comparative TVs but, on reflection, a few port tastings where we come in some way below a bottle a head is not a bad thing. Between those declaring their holdings we already have everything other than the 1991...

Taylor's Terra Feita Vertical, Wednesday 2 November 2022, B&F

Now confirmed for 1800 kickoff on 2 November 2022, Red Room at the Boot and Flogger. Back in the pre-Covid mists of time I was drinking a delicious glass of Taylor's Terra Feita 2005. 85% red juice. An entirely congruent port- the plump-sultana-and-glace-cherry-led fruit cake it promised on the nose...

- TV 1995 (en demi)
- Mons Helios 2009, Domaine Florent Garaudet, Monthelie
- Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero 1996
- Quinta de la Rosa 1991 (in decanter, and very pleasant)

1991 Quinta de la Rosa

Decanting sample taken after 30 mins, 12/4/2020. Red wine, 10% orange rim. Prickle of heat on the nose, slight red jelly bean note, otherwise dumb. On the palate, blackcurrant leaf, sour cherry mid palate, slightly attenuated but attractive spiced cranberry finish. Will leave to open out until tomor...

1995 Taylor Vargellas

From half. 80% opaque red juice. Citrus fruit and fruit blossom on the nose and the promise of richness. Melton Hunt Cake, says my rather precise co-taster, on the front palate. Molasses, somehow savoury, and poached plums with star anise towards the end. Drying chocolate and coffee tannins. Very ni...

1980 Croft Roeda

70% rose coloured, 30% orange rim. A gentle note of sage, and rose hip sweetness, on the nose. Pronounced orange marmalade on the mid palate. Gently warming sweet orange finish. Very pleasant wine. I am not sure this was ever a really powerful port but it is, on the evidence of this bottle, now saun...

Re: Lockdown Drinking

Tom - without wishing to commit lese-majeste - are you sure your bottle of T92 was right? I have a strong [sufficiently strong to be slightly irrational] anti-Parker prejudice, but I've had T92 twice in the last eight months, and been wowed by it. 'Hollow' is not a word I would have used to describe...

2000 Niepoort

95% opaque red juice. Poached plum on the nose. Big hit of raspberries on the front palate, poached plum and bassetti thereafter, long, warming, delicious and fresh finish, nothing cloying about this one. Youthful but not immature, this is drinking now with a decent decant, and is admirable port. De...

A glossy Chambolle-Musigny 2014, Domaine Odoul-Coquard, all blackcurrant and chocolate, was my reward for one of the longest working weeks of my life (everything that needs any discussion seems to take much longer by email/phone/videoconference compared to popping round to someone's desk for two min...

Re: 2005 Croft Roeda

Andy, thank you. Certainly the wine I am (re) tasting this evening is not the one I recognise from your tasting note (which tasting note, albeit ten years old, was the reason I bought it when offered it at a decent price in the first place). The bottle I am re-tasting this evening is pleasant, but f...

2005 Croft Roeda

From half bottle. 2 hr decant. 60% opaque, red juice. Indeterminate nose. Rather nice berry compote in the mouth, but they are not particularly differentiated berries, albeit there's discernibly some white currants in the mix. Warm towards the finish. On the sweet side of balanced now, but will beco...

Re: 1979 Warre LBV (Unfiltered)

Retasted on 31/03/20.

Rich ruby colour retained. Liquorice/garrigue/slight aniseed nose and palate; attractively medicinal. Black cherry on the palate, possibly a hint of dates. Still has the freshness, not at all sticky. Very good. One of which to buy more if I see it.

1979 Warre LBV (unfiltered)

Bottled 1984. Level i.n.. Almost no sediment on decant. 60% opaque rich red juice- a fine looking port. Herbaceous nose, slightly underwhelming, promising less than it delivers. Some dates early, and delicious red cherry flavours mid-palate. Very long warm finish with touch of orange. Lovely balance...

Yes please. I couldn't do Wednesday 1st, the toad work. Tuesday 7th April I would be there, with my port ready-decanted and an expectant expression. I might even put on a dinner jacket although, alas, no cat will be available to assist me with the tasting.

1995 Taylor Vargellas

Half bottle. 60% opaque. Fairly spirity when first popped and decanted and not a great pleasure to drink. Dramatic amounts of sediment. After 72 hours in a decanter in the fridge, almond and cherry blossom on the nose (really!). Morello cherry jam and later rosehip syrup on the palate. Warm but not ...
