Burmester 1995. It was pretty good! Wouldn't wait too long to drink it, though, it's not one for the long haul.

I never remove a bottle from the middle of a stack. I'm terrified of a collapse.Old Bridge wrote: ↑19:36 Wed 13 Dec 2023 Can you then remove any bottle, or just the top one in each column?

Re: Strength of Port bottles
I have something similar to what you describe. Mine has 6 rows, each with 9/10 bottles.
But don't worry too much about that. Bottles are often stored in crates like these ones, and these things hold 500-700 bottles, with multiple rows as you can see.

There is also now (as of 2022) the new Very Very Old Port category, which I believe is intended for bottles that are 80+ years old. I haven't seen that regulation, though, so am not sure about the exact age required for something to be labeled VVO. Here you go! https://files.diariodarepublica.pt/2s...

Re: Port for sale by retailer
Garrafeira Nacional is having its customary 20% off all fortified wines. Is that seriously off all fortified wines? Even things like Niepoort Garrafeira, where they are already the cheapest source in Europe? That's a definite "yes". https://www.garrafeiranacional.com/catalogsearch/result/...

Re: Vintage at last??
That's a pretty accurate description of the growing season. I would just make a small addition. I think maturation this year was a few days - maybe a week - behind, relative to what is considered 'normal'. Had we had a slightly warmer June/July (and to a lesser extent August), which would've sped up...

Re: Vintage port & the adolescent lull
What remains to be seen is whether that young "brutality" played a part in giving the wines such longevities as we see in (some) Ports from the 1920s/30s/40s (and even older), and if these modern, 'more-approachable-when-younger" Ports will have the same 100+ year longevity. But alas,...

Re: Bottles you never want to open
The double magnum will age much more slowly than a regular bottle (other things being equal). So it'll reach maturity much later.
