Re: Glasses: what to buy; where to buy?

I hand wash my glass because there's rarely more than one in use, so it's just easier to go ahead and wash it than to put it in the dishwasher and have to wait. (Or, more correctly, end up with 7 of them in the dishwasher from a week's worth of drinking.) I do need to pick up a few more - a dozen ou...

Re: Glasses: what to buy; where to buy?

I use the Riedel Vinum Port glass almost exclusively, and like Roy I have found them to be very reasonably durable. I have managed to break one, though - I was drying it by hand and applied too much pressure to the inside of the rim by using two fingers and a dish towel to dry the inside of the glas...

Re: Tax and Duty Comparisons

Most states only charge sales tax for items bought in a state where you are physically at. If you buy it over the phone and have it shipped, then there is no tax as you are not physically buying it in the state (makes no sense, huh?). Some states do charge sales tax no matter what and some don't. A...

I'm not real keen on the alternating colors in the threads... to me, the white background posts don't look like posts and so I keep trying to skip them. I think the forum would look better if tawny alternated with some other color instead of white.

Re: Always wanted to own a port company?

Yeah, I've noticed that Ficklin (CA) and a few Aussie companies have basic rubies available in my corner grocery store... but they're more expensive than Graham's Six Grapes and not nearly as good. Makes no sense to me. The Aussies do manage to produce some very good dessert wines, but I hav...

Re: Keeping tabs on other types of port.

"Colheita" just means harvest (or vintage) in Portugese - it's not just a Port term. Colheita Seleccionada then means something along the lines of "harvest select" or "select vintage" and is probably the equivalent of a German Spaetlese or Auslese.

Re: 1983 Warre's Vintage Port

I came back to the lowball for a taste. WOW! I hereby swear off standard ruby port. I'll never be able to drink it again. Ahh, yes, hello and welcome to the non-budget world of vintage port. Yeah, well that was 6 months ago. ;) I have since found a couple of rubies that serve well as "in betwe...

1983 Warre's Vintage Port

I'm cross-posting this from FTLOP in order to help populate the 'W' section of the index. 1983 Warre's Vintage Port by Glenn E. on February 3rd, 2008, 12:43 pm Fair warning - this is not only my first post of a tasting note, but it is also my first Vintage Port. So I'm a little inexperienced ...

Yeah I had my doubts about it as well, but like I said that's what someone told me. I can't remember who it was, though. /shrug You know what's funny? I'd never noticed the 2 letters or the lower 2 digits. I thought the Selo was just a 6-digit number, which made the 1-number-per-run explanation seem...

I’ve also wondered about how they deal with Ports that have no indication of vintage and are issued perennially (e.g. Tawnies and Rubies). Presumably they are retested annually, but I haven’t seen any information as to whether this results in a new number being issued (which might be quite interest...

Moses,

Have you tried the Sandeman 20-yr old Tawny? That has LOADS of acid in it... far too much for my taste. I posted a TN over at FTLOP.

I can tell that it's a very good 20-yr old, I just don't like the style. But if you're looking for acidity in your Port, this one should be on your list.

I probably average a glass 2-3 times a week. If I have a bottle open I'll have a glass every night, but once the bottle is empty it's sometimes a week or so before I open another. The weather isn't cooperating right now... it's just a little too warm out (and we don't have air conditioning) to be dr...

1967 was my birth year! was that a good vintage? Unfortunately not  - there are some 1967 VPs but not many and none of them are particularly special. Don't worry Vicky, I have the same problem with 1964. In a way, it makes it more satisfying to finally track down a bottle and acquire it! Welco...

Now now, Andy, you know we don't invade sovereign nations!

No, we'll just send over a few "ambassadors" in order to "assist" them in maintaining the high quality storage standards that Port demands!

Since you said on FTLOP that you can't see yourself ever opening a bottle from the 1964 vintage, when you manage to drop into the UK and we're around, we will just have to see what we can organise. Maybe we'll get you to taste a port from your birth year yet! Well... I meant just the LAST bottle. I...

Re: On the cellaring of port

Vibration is not good over the long term, as it can accelerate seepage through a senile cork, as well as mixing sediment with the liquid: don’t hold ports for many years in a fridge. (Though some wine fridges separate the motor from the cabinet containing the juice: such fridges should not be a pro...

I've been involved over at ftlop.com for a while but just hadn't gotten around to registering here. Now I have! I was given my first bottle of Port on my 40th birthday and have been drinking and learning ever since. I prefer aged tawnies and colheitas, but I'm starting to like VP as well. I also dri...
