Re: Latest buy

Just to be clear I am a big fan of Raeburn Fine Wines, I have been a customer for many years. I knew this Port did not have the best of reputations but I wanted to try it. Note as stated I only bought a half bottle for a reason. And just to be clear I have only had positive experiences, and they do...

Re: Latest buy

Mr Doty I have just tried said half of Niepoort 94, undrinkable with hints of paint stripper. Conversation with retailer required. Experts in multiple countries have separately diagnosed me as insane, but I wouldn’t mind inviting niepoort and Raeburn to a group chat with Tpf to discuss. This situat...

Re: Christopher Doty - reluctant man of science

12 hrs later the wines have improved. A glass bounces when it shatters off the floor. If someone said “black fruit” on the nose...: I would be sympathetic. It is not fruit. It is vestige of fruit. But round and warm and not wholly unattractive or in any way off putting The finish has a similar quali...

Press notice says “Quinta do Vesúvio”.
• Bottle label says “Quinta do Vesuvio”.

Accent, or no accent? Ú, or U: tell me.

Christopher Doty - reluctant man of science

As science has never been sexier, I thought I’d try a hand. Since purchasing more than I could afford upon their release from gman exclusive us importer, I have been storing too many 2011quevedo at nuclear conditions in the basement of my family’s ancestral Park Avenue abode. One bottle was cooked f...

Re: The last 5 years: good luck or an improvement?

I'm not 100% sure about Portugal, but most of continental europe has laws framed around the concept that everything is prohibited except that which is allowed, whereas the UK legal framework takes the opposite stance. In America we’re racing toward: "Everything not forbidden is compulsory."

Re: The last 5 years: good luck or an improvement?

...some real disappointments. Some of those disappointments were down to winemaking and hygiene and some outside the immediate control of the winemaker (Gould Campbell 1977 corks, for example). Hmm. I don’t trust any 1977vp, and a lot of that has to do with my experience with the Symington range. I...

Roses tend to suffer mildew before the vines do, so if a rose bush planted near the entrance to a quinta starts showing mildew, it's time to spray.

I've never quite undersood exactly how the old boot and flogger system worked - I can't help feel there must have been a third tool at play. If you simply try to hammer a quality cork into a bottle with a mallet, it doesn't usually oblige.
