Similar depth of colour to the Taylor - deep centre, red-brown with a paling rim. An open and inviting nose that was sweet and attractive with dried cranberries dominating over golden syrup. Golden syrup in the mouth which develops the cranberries promised on the nose and an odd tone of washing up l...

Orange rim, pale centre, looking quite elderly. A touch of VA on the nose with dried figs and fresh cut apples and suet. Very sweet entry , lots of spearmint and secondary flavours. A thick texture that gets thicker when held in the mouth. Weak aftertase. Pleasant, but not great. Drink up. 1/1 or 86...

Light edge, clear centre. Toffee and coffee fudge on the nose. Dry entry with a watery texture. The sweetness comes through as part of the mid-palate, bringing a flood of restrained strawberry syrup. Still some tannins in the wine but most of the structure comes from the acidity that balances the sy...

A pale centre and watery rim. Spearmint dominating the nose. A beautiful entry that turns slightly harsh in the mid-palate before the harsh tones resolve themselves with additional air to give fresh pears and sweet damsons. Gently elegant aftertaste that floats away but is better than you'd expect f...

I'm about to paste my tasting notes on what was quite an occasion. After that I'll write up a Guest's Corner Article for Roy to include in his newsletter. If anyone wants to remain unnamed or use an alias in the article then please let me know, otherwise I'll use first names and initials (eg. Simon ...

What takes up most space in your cellar?

A recent email from Derek made me think of an interesting question to ask - what is the port (or the two or three ports) that you have most of in your cellar. My top three will not suprise those of you who know me as "Mr Vesuvio", they are: 1) Vesuvio 2004 2) Vesuvio 1999 3) Vesuvio 1994 A...

What a fabulous evening - great company, great port and some folks I've only ever met online before. I only wish I'd read h,G and I's bottled water post before last night so I could have ordered bottled water for the table instead of big jugs of tap water. Great ports - my port of the night was the ...

There is beer at the Crusting Pipe. You have a choice of Davy's Wallop or Davy's Lager...or of drinking at one of the other hostelries nearby.

Anyone heard how Julian's tiddlywinks went last night?

2004 Fonseca Crusted Port

An emergency decant, tasted after one hour. A short, unbranded cork and a modest amount of sediment of the purple/red grape skin variety. An impenetrable red colour with a purple edge. Nose of dust and blackcurrants. Smooth entry, dry but ripe tannic grip but lots of sweet ripe fruit. Initially nice...

But 19:00 is good for me.

Of course you'll be fine, we'll all swear blind that there's only one bottle of port per person and by the time we've taken into account all the losses through decanting and evaporation then it will be nearly only a bottle per person. And the 9:55 from Heathrow - hopefully you're staying in a hotel ...

Most Popular Vintage for Drinking in 2007

Out of idle curiosity and completely unsure what I can do with the information, I'm interested to learn which vintage you think you drank most often in 2007. My choice of vintage when I open a bottle is always a balance between older ports - which I love but can't afford all the time - and replaceme...

So I pulled my bottles for the '66 tasting out of their resting places last night. I can now officially describe myself as excited.

The only question is, what do I open over the weekend to build up to the events of Monday?

Not quite - plan A includes John. I'd love for him to be able to join us at the last minute, but we are planning that he won't be able to make it.

Back to plan B. We are expecting 12 people for Monday's tasting so we can go back to including the Nacional in the line up provided everyone is willing to add an additional £4 each as we go from sharing the cost between 13 people to sharing between 12.

I shall stand the bottle back up again!

I would also add that there is a member of this forum who might be very interested in your bottle as he was born in 1965 and, the vintage not being a widely declared one, he is always interested to buy or share bottles from '65. Derek is probably also the only person who is able to provide you with ...

I've had a heads-up that there may be a couple of more people who may not be able to make the tasting on Monday. If this turns out to be the case, I can't in all good conscience, take their money for the Nacional knowing that they will not be with us. Instead, I propose that we keep the Nacional for...

Although I have little personal interest in buying larger format bottles (except for a Nebuchadnezzar of 1896 we know of in London), I do think that the rule is eccentric in the extreme. I would be willing to support a campaign to change such a rule just on the principles of supporting free trade. A...
