Port Vintage Martinho 1881

Post by Sergio1975 »

Hello
Im in a process of selling 1 bottle of Porto Martinho 1881.

The Bottle was given to me in 1999 and it as been kept in a wine cellar near by Oporto where I have a country house.

The wax is 80 % in good condition , and the area that protects the cork in 100% sealed.

Im in the restaurant business in Portugal , and ive asked for a wine specialist to take a look at it. This is a specialist from ADHOC wines in Portugal.

I can send the bottle to any country , inside a wooden box and with all the precautions in the package .
Keep in mind that country outside EU, will pay for taxes and custom services for sure, and those it will be at buyers cost , the same for the shipping costs.

At the moment the bottle is stored at my restaurant inside a wine unity in Lisbon.

Im asking 650 euros for it.
Thank you for reading.

A very interesting bottle, best of luck with the sale!

As a question to those here that know much more than I do: I've seen some old bottles labelled "vinho velho do porto" before, and I'm never sure if it is truly a port from the Douro, port-style fortified wine from the surrounding area, or an unfortified wine from either the Douro or its surroundings. I'm presuming there was no standard of labelling at the time, but are there some things you can look for when trying to interpret these labels?

I’m not sure “vinho velho do porto” should raise any particular suspicions since it really just means “Old Port”. The address is also given as Régua which is in the middle of the Baixo Corgo: the Western-most part of the Port region.

There’s an interesting question as to what this bottle is. I presume since the tag says “Reserva Velhissima (Particular)” it is a private reserve which was first sold when the wine had reached a significant age. That would tie in with the fact that the only reference I can see to Martinho in the context of Port are from other adverts for this 1881 wine. However, since there isn’t any indication as to when it was bottled, we don’t know if it was some sort of colheita or a full Vintage that’s had 135+ years in a bottle.

Whilst there is some fake Port around, including some unexpected fakes, I am not sure there is much fortified wine produced outside of the demarcated zone, either to be sold in its own right or to be sold as Port. (There is a story that the Marquess of Pombal sold “port” from his vineyards in Carcavelos outside Lisbon and, indeed, insisted on them being added to the first demarcated region but I am not sure that has much practical impact on the bottles we see today!). But I’d be interested to know if someone else had come across it. In principle, I can’t see why you wouldn’t be able to make a passable “Port” in say Dão or one of the surrounding regions. I just don’t think anyone does it.

In any event, whilst I have not heard of this bottle before, I do see it being sold by some mainstream places like Garrafeira Nacional so they must be satisfied that it is genuine.

The Garrafeira Nacional link is instructional, as they are not known for having low prices. In fact quite the opposite, and they have it listed at 590 EUR. So while I have no opinion on the quality or value of this particular Port, if I wanted to buy a bottle I'd just get it from GN and at least have some chance at recourse if something goes wrong.

The Garrafeira link is also helpful as it lists the bottle as a colheita. I'm also seeing a 20% discount right now, bringing the bottle to 472 EUR.
