1991 Churchill

Post by winesecretary »

A sample decanted two months ago and stored under argon for this delayed tasting.

The darkest wine of the five Churchills being tasted tonight- 85% opaque still, red rim.

Noble nose of rich dark fruit - pruneaux d'agen fourees - and dark chocolate.

In the mouth, a little initial heat, fairly congruent but lighter than the nose promises (or threatens, depending on your perspective).

The finish is a little less full-throttle than one might expect, but there still some interesting black wine gum chewiness towards the 45 second mark.

Becomes more congruent and indeed charming later.

This is a really good 1991. A mite unsophisticated perhaps. Ready on this showing but with a decade or so of life ahead.

Consumed 28/4/21

A 9cl sample bottle decanted under Argon by Neil (thank you Neil) from a 75cl bottle for the original date of the Churchill tasting on 24 Feb 2021.

A rich and deep red with the black tone seen in some of the younger Gricha single quinta Ports; intensely pigmented with a medium rim. Warm ripe fruit, with the smell of a hot Douro day blended into the dark red fruit, ripe and aromatic. Dry fruit, slightly dirty and with surprising tannins. Nicely concentrated palate but lacking the balance shown by the younger Gricha Ports. Dry aftertaste and a dark cherry finish backed by the dark chocolate and liquorice tannins. This is a big and chunky wine that lacks a little elegance and finesse but doesn't lack in burliness. 88/100. Finally drunk 28-Apr-21.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
