NV Cabral Tawny 40YO

Bottling circa 1960s - UK label, no selo, wax seal, bottle with bulbous neck that it took a Durand with which to get the elderly cork out whole.

Some very fine dirty sediment, consistent (in my mainly madeira-based experience) with a cask-aged wine having been bottled circa 60 years ago.

What I would call a 'proper' 40 yr old tawny colour, translucent orangey-brown with a yellow rim.

Nose like an old woody colheita, with some sultanas underneath. Again, almost madeira-like.

But the palate definitely portious. Warm marmalade sponge pudding. Then some spice.

Finish long and marmalade-soaked, with an increasing and attractive jamaica ginger cake element from about 15 seconds in.

I did not have extremely high hopes for this; but it is very interesting.

Sweeter orange, with some soft sultana and turkish delight elements. Long and warm. Splendid with a petit pot au chocolat.
