VE (etc) Day Tasting - Weds 8 Sept 2021

Post by nac »

During idle discussion at the 2000 Zombie Apocalypse tasting (which is not unlike the predictions relating to Y2K), I proposed a tasting related to celebration of 1945 events.

Whilst VPs from 1945 would clearly be a preference for this, it was suggested that extending to VPs from 1939 to 1945 would be a reasonable expansion.

Should this not elicit sufficient bottles, expansion to include the post 1945 rationing years might be appropriate.
Note - all food rationing in Britain ended 4 July 1954.

Date now Wednesday 8th September 2021 in one of the private dining rooms at 67 Pall Mall.

If you weren't previously on the list, but would like to be, please speak up as I suspect we will get some more unavailables.

From an anniversary perspective, the 8th September 2021 is (according to Wikipedia) the 75th Anniversary of Bulgaria being declared a People's Republic after a referendum. Possibly not as good as the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, but still worth celebrating... But not with Bulgarian wine.

I would be keen but I am ’45-less. Would adopt if anyone had some spare, and will keen an eye out for some.

I would be keen but am similarly 45-less. would be prepared to adopt, and will similarly hunt. If it is extended, from the rationing years I have just a single bottle of Dow 1950.

I'm definitely up for this. Perhaps a bottle of Fonseca Guimaraens 1942?
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Whilst VE Day celebrations are scheduled for 8th May, I would suggest that the probability of this tasting taking place then is pretty much zero. Once some degree of normality returns I’ll suggest some dates for later in the year.

I've provisionally got one of the private dining rooms at 67 Pall Mall booked for Monday 14th September.

Could all who previously expressed an interest please confirm availability and if not already done so what their offering is.

I suspect we'll need to limit this to 8 people, but if it looks like it'll be significantly fewer then I'll postpone until later in the year.

Works for me. Still haven't found anything more age-appropriate than the Dow 1950, however.

Done.

If promoted from reserve (which is reasonably likely) might you have an alternative bottle? We've already got a Ferreira 45, and whilst a comparison would be interesting suspect the general preference would be for greater variety. If not, don't worry.

Am at 67 on Wednesday and going to investigate the maximum number they'll let us have. Hopefully we can do 9 or 10.
