TPF pre-NYE party 29th December 2020

Post by Doggett »

To mark the end of a ‘challenging’ year, but one that has been improved no end by lots of virtual :tpf: tastings, it seems only right to see the old out and the new in with style, meaning yet another zoom tasting! All those interested in adding to their alcohol intake for the festive season, please sign up below. A host maybe required if Mike cannot.

I believe I will be able to attend. There's a small possibility I won't but I'll update closer to the time if so.

Probably. But put me on the list please.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Seeing Wolfgang is hoping to join reminds me of a decade ago when Wolfgang, Rob, someone else who I forget and I met for dinner and Port in the days between Christmas and New Year. We didn't discuss which Port we should bring and all chose independently and brought the bottles blind.

We all brought Cockburn 1955. It did make for a splendid dinner.

Reading this prompted me to wonder if a tasting of different bottlers of the same Port should go onto the list of potential future events?

If so, what are the candidates?

As a starter, I think I’ve got a four or five variants of Warre 70 and suspect others are available.

If this was a tasting for 12/14 then we’d probably need to do two or three different wines.

Thoughts?

See Corks and bottles: Oporto versus London; Comparing the bottlers; and UK v Oporto bottling.

And I am very definitely in. Yes please. (It was my idea, over a decade ago.)

Thank you!

Is the theme to open something good, or something from a challenging year like the 75'? We might turn away JDAW if so

I have a bottle that matches the theme of “A challenging year”.

The theme is usally "Open a bottle of Port you're going to enjoy drinking since you won't be able to share it with anyone."

That reasoning is strange. Surely if I am going to share a bottle with somebody else then it is more important that it be enjoyable.

Hi,

after having driven back to Blighty from Germany yesterday the status from likely attendee can switch to attendee. Just opened a Cockburns 70 for tonight. Am a bit confused as from a lot believed to be Taylors 70......

Anyway happy to be back in England for tonight's tasting as my German WLAN would have not been able to cope as still the old telephone line from ~80 years ago

regards
