In a thread appropriately named Pleasures of a bygone civilisation, there has been dispute as to the better of 1908 and 1912.

You know where this is going.

At least two lists of possible attendees will be maintained. First, those able to bring appropriate bottles, or have them brought on their behalf. Merely hoping to adopt would not be sufficient qualification for this list. A subsidiary list will hold hopers. We will have a shortage of bottles: priority to those who can.

Wayward Tendrils of the Vine (1947), Ian Maxwell Campbell, mentions the competition between a different pair of Port vintages, concluding:
Both vintages are decidedly above average quality, but neither, it may be surmised, outstandingly better than the other, and the rivalry between them may be as long lived as that between the popular 1899 and 1900 clarets.
This might be the correct analogy for the ’08-’12 competition.

If Doty cup 5, then SCD should be the organiser.

Count me in please… it is highly likely I will need to adopt…

But even better is the idea of DOTY cup 5 and I would be happy to host at www.theheritagebandb.com if we can get the dates right. I believe other rounds/libations will be required along with sour dough bread and lots of cheese! Let’s make it happen.

This will be jdaw1, Chris Doty, two phantom guests, and two bottles.

I thought I had one colheita from one of those years but I don't even have that, it's an 1897.

This has become a Doty Cup. The rules are now CSD’s rules — and he doesn’t really believe in rules — so anything might happen.

Perhaps we should also aim to do a comparison of Ports of a similar age as would have been those when Pleasures of a Bygone Civilisation was being written.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I am a hoper. I have no vintage port that old and indeed have almost never tried any. A half of Warre 1912 that the colour had fallen out of is the sum total.

Dom 02 was stellar a few years back, but is in my view ageing alarmingly quickly. I've drunk all mine.

Sounds like you are having more fun than we are at the moment, though.

Have no 08 but have Niepoort Colheita 12 which I think should qualify. At least for me this is the greatest Colheita I drank so far.

Yes please.

Have a bottle of something 1908, and could offer a fairly decent selection of 2002 Champagnes as a pre-event event...
