5th November 2064 - a Quevedo Salmanazar..
Nothing like planning ahead...
I plan to launch a large format dinner each year on bonfire night when I finally retire from the fireworks business. The first is pencilled in for 2024, but might come sooner..
The idea is that on odd numbered years, two magnums will be on the table with a combined age of at least 100 years, that on World Cup years a double magnum will be decanted, on alternate Olympic years an Imperial will be drunk, and that the remaining Olympic years will alternate between a Salmanazar (9L) and Nebuchadnezzar (15L)
I now have the little matter of accumulating sufficient bottles..
I need more magnums, have enough double mags (but a poor spread of ages), enough (6) Imperials and enough (3) Nebuchadnezzars, but only two Salmanazars.
I have therefore persuaded Oscar to make a 9L bottling of his next vintage, and he has decided to fill just ten.
I shall be taking one, which will be decanted on the above-mentioned date - if anyone else is interested in buying one, please let either me or Oscar know..

I’d love to accept, but expect to be ‘unavailable’ on that date.JDAW wrote:However a comment of Dominic Symington should give some pause: “If a very large bottle is lying horizontally, there is excessive constant pressure on the cork, and for a long time. Additionally the greater the diameter of the neck the larger the cork has to be, compromising its ability to compress and create a decent seal. There is also the problem of capillary action. Which is why SFE has recently decided no longer to bottle larger than an imperial.” I wondered whether bottles could be stored at 45°, but Dominic observed that it might still be “too much of a risk, particularly in transit when the wine is sloshing around inside the bottle”.

perhaps if you store it with the neck tilted upward so some liquid stays in contact with the cork but doesn't put undue pressure on it?jdaw1 wrote: ↑21:56 Fri 10 Feb 2017 In the essay on Big Bottles of Port: Ending The ProhibitionI’d love to accept, but expect to be ‘unavailable’ on that date.JDAW wrote:However a comment of Dominic Symington should give some pause: “If a very large bottle is lying horizontally, there is excessive constant pressure on the cork, and for a long time. One in 2: two magnums (2×1½L = 3L), average age ≥50 years;
One in 4: double magnum (3L);
One in 8: Imperial (6L);
One in 16: Salmanazar (9L);
One in 16: Nebuchadnezzar (15L).

Re: 5th November 2064 - a Quevedo Salmanazar..
This seems like a fabulous idea, and I would like to put my name forward as available for any or all of the November 5th dates that are appropriate. I love Oscar's port and these are bound to be lovely tastings... particularly if it is the 2015 release that I have high hopes for being my wedding anniversary vintage. And also because sadly I do not have the funds at this time to get my own 'Sally'. What a marvellous way to spend bonfires evening. If there are aver spaces available Tom... let me know!
Re: 5th November 2064 - a Quevedo Salmanazar..
If I reserve a space can I pass it (and appropriate quantity of port) to one of my children?

I think you can put me down for 2024, but only as tentative for 2068.

Re: 5th November 2064 - a Quevedo Salmanazar..
Following last month's 'turkey shoot' sale at Christies, my stock of magnums has been greatly improved; and I am now looking at raising the challenge by defining the odd numbered year two magnum events as two magnums with a combined age of exactly 100 years.
For the 2025 event I already have a T55 lined up, so to make the 100 I need a single 1995 magnum - but who bottled mags that year?
Is there a Vesuvio? Cellartracker suggests there is, but there seem to be a few fantasy cellars included on that site, so not reliable.
Any others known to exist? Anyone have one they might care to part with??
The 2027 event is already covered with two '77 mags - Warre and SW. The 2029 event will see another T55, but this time paired with an '03 mag - not yet purchased, but should be easy enough to find..

I don't recall ever having seen a magnum of 1995 vintage port. Vesuvio might well have bottled magnums since they did so for the 1994 vintage, but I don't think I've ever seen one. I **think** wine-searcher pro version allows you to search for specific formats, but it's many years since I had a pro subscription so I don't know for sure whether it did and if it did, whether it still has.uncle tom wrote: ↑14:10 Mon 29 Jan 2018For the 2025 event I already have a T55 lined up, so to make the 100 I need a single 1995 magnum - but who bottled mags that year?

Count me in, Tom. I have Rozes 1995 in Magnums.
Happy to spend a O-PORT-UNIDADE 5 Liter bottle 2013, wherever that fits in.
Best

Re: 5th November 2064 - a Quevedo Salmanazar..
That's a good point. Tom did just say "...he plans to open..." and carefully avoided saying that all of the large formats he opens will come from his cellar. Some of us also have large formats although I don't suppose a Tappit Hen fits into the pattern. I own two 6l Imperials from the 2011 vintage. Clearly I didn't buy them, they just miraculously appeared one day, but I'm happy to volunteer to open them once your imperial formats have run out, say 2076 and 2084.

Thanks Axel - I'll put that down for 2025Count me in, Tom. I have Rozes 1995 in Magnums.
Thankyou Alex - please put a note on your will..!I'm happy to volunteer to open them once your imperial formats have run out, say 2076 and 2084.
Thankyou. I think other large formats could be added on an ad hoc basis to bulk out the events on non-Olympic years.Happy to spend a O-PORT-UNIDADE 5 Liter bottle 2013, wherever that fits in.
Aside from the '95 magnum for the 2025 event, I also need a mate for a Croft '66 that I have in mind for 2031, so will also be looking for a '96 magnum..
