Quinta do Cachao Vertical on Wed 23rd October 2019

Post by forest26 »

Set for Week commencing 23rd October 2019.

Miguel from Messias and myself have arranged for 23rd October. There is no need to contribute physical bottles as Miguel is providing most of the ports gratis. Where I have had to fill some gaps (I am still struggling with the 63) there will be a nominal cost.

I visited Caves Messias in N D Gaia a few weeks ago. Between Messias and myself, we can construct an almost complete vertical of Quinta do Cachao VP. There is an offer from Messias to help put this together. Let me know your thoughts - If there is interest and I will start to firm up....

(My assumption is that PF members do not hold a lot of these and that most (if not all) of the bottles will come from Messias / myself.

I have owned two bottles of port from Messias - the 1963 Cachão was opened for my birthday in 2013 and the Messias 1977 colheita was drunk in April 2010. In addition, I have tasted Cachão from 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1970 and Messias from 1970 and 2011. And that's it!

Thanks for the idea Tony.

From my chats with Messias, Messias Vigario always said, that 60 was their first Vintage and 47 their first Colheita. We might want to include some of them as well as they really are better in quality than the Vintages.

I and one or two others at last night's tasting think that September is still the best month for this vertical and so what about earlier in the month-say 18th?

Might have to kick this into Jan / Feb 2019. The Messias guys are a little busy early September and after that I am tied up until the New Year.

To my understanding the labels "Messias" and "Quinta do Cachao" were used on different markets for the same wine until the vintage of 2007. As of 2009 "Messias" and "Quinta do Cachao" are two different wines. Is that what you mean by the quote above?

I will have to postpone this to a later date as we will not have the wines in time - the suggestion is near the BFT.

I still have the room booked if we want to do something else (and a little less logistically challenging).

How about we use the 13 Feb for a 1970 theme. Most of us will have a bottle of ‘70 fairly handy I would think. I stop short of saying a ‘70 horizontal as that needs a bit more planning and thinking through.

Once we can get some support for a theme, everyone who signed up for 13 Feb can confirm or drop away if preferred.

I'm always happy to drink 1970 Ports. I'm in.

You could loosen it slightly and make it "Port from the '70s"

70's tasting would be nice and easy. Definitely up for this as Room is booked for 13th - I may have a problem with moving to Valentines day

I'll work out an alternative date with Miguel from Messias. We are both keen to organise this but it will have to be later.

I'll amend the post header.

70's (or from that decade, don't mind which) is a great alternative idea. Still up for Quinta do Cachao when it is possible to arrange. The 13th works for me, but the 14th might land me in trouble.

OK I Have an offer of a date second half of October

I am proposing 15 or 16 or (more likely) 22nd or 23rd (a week before the 69). I need to get back to confirm quickly.

Miguel will send over most of the port to me - I don't think there will be a cost for their ports.
Where I have had to purchase a few odd bottles to fill in the gaps there will be a nominal cost.

Let me know your thoughts.....
