I know of one other label which produced a 1970 (of which I have a couple of bottles):
Amandio (Real Companhia Vinicola do Norte de Portugal)

I also have some Kopke Q. Sao Luiz, Cálem and Messias Cachao form 1970 (If possible, I would like to sign up for this tasting :-) )

I have a few 1970. Some in greater quantities than others. And I’m free that day, if there is space!

I have a suspicion that this will prove to be a very popular tasting. I haven't opened a waiting list yet because with the benefit of planning so far ahead, we have the ability to seek out two bottles of each wine and so accommodate up to 28 people.

But please, rather than tease me with vague statements like "I have a few 1970", let me know what you have. It doesn't have to be in thread - you can tell me by PM or by email. But if the list above starts to identify that we need to find a Ferreira, for example, we can make sure that when one comes up for auction one of us manages to acquire it!
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Excellent idea !

Of those not mentioned so far, I have Butler Nephew, Ferrerira, Gonzalez-Byass & Sandeman (only 1 bottle of the Sandeman) which I would be happy to contribute. If there is space, I would like to attend also, but I am happy to contribute the bottles regardless.

All,

funnily enough discussed this with Uncletom in the Bell a week ago. Ideally we should have a 2bt tasting in order to allow more participants to take part. However this requires logistics on a scale we have not done before. Especially I think we never had 28 People at a tasting. Biggest was the Olympic port tasting 2012 in the Portugese embassy. Dates seem not be an issue at this stage but I am sure when it comes to it it may.
If we were to be able to book the Presidents room in the RAF club we might have a chance to do a 28 People tasting. Alternatively if you have other room options please let us know. Please also factor in that this tasting in the big format would require glass service etc. which add to the cost. In Terms of number of ports I would limit it to 18-20 different ports. If a full tasting is wanted a two tastings (afternoon and evening session) approach need to be considered most likely resulting in a weekend of port drinking.

regards

My request is simple. The ’70 babies should choose: give this attention and work; or admit that you aren’t/won’t and cancel.

I much prefer that it happens — with me attending.

As one of the 1970 vintage babies, have a vested interest in this. As such, AHB and I are going to look at 67 Pall Mall (of which I'm a shareholder) as a possible venue for hosting a 1970 tasting.

Will report back mid Jan re potential options...

As Neil says, he and I are taking a look at 67 Pall Mall as a possible venue in a couple of weeks time.

If a weekend "away" is desirable, I can hire rooms at Phyllis Court in Henley-on-Thames with relative ease (if not already booked). There are also bedrooms available in Phyllis Court, the Leander Club, the Hotel du Vin (aka Breakspear's Brewery) or other assorted AirBnB establishments in the town, all of which will be no more than a 5-15 minute walk.

If in town and 67 Pall Mall does not work, we have the option of the Naval & Military Club (which also has bedrooms) as an alternative to the RAF Club. Glasses can be hired from Sensible Wine Services; standard ISO are relatively cheap, the standard Riedel tasting glass is also quite cheap but Riedel Port glasses are much less so.

From experience, limiting the 1963 weekend to a maximum of 15 Ports per sitting (and 3 sittings) was about right. If considering also entertaining other halves, you will need to develop a tasting theme for them.

Having two bottles / 1 magnum of each wine is quite possible, but two bottles will lead to many people wanting to try each bottle to appreciate the bottle variation. I advise opening one bottle of each wine and having a back-up of as many bottles as you can in case the bottle opened is spoiled.

And if you want to have a really, really spectacular 50th birthday celebration then talk to me about hiring the Factory House during São João week...

67 Pall Mall sounds like an interesting option (and an interesting place to visit); If not suitable for a full group, would perhaps be interesting to have a smaller tasting there sometime.

Regarding the two-bottles issue, I suspect we would have significantly more than 14 wanting to take part; whether we would come close to 28 might depend on the date selected. Tough call, especially with the increased complexity of organisation/venue for the higher numbers.

As much as I would love to be able to do a tasting at the Factory House [at anytime],... mid summer is unlikely to work for me, but I hope that others get the opportunity to make the chance happen. It seems that this tasting of possibly of possibly the best vintage of our lifetimes (I am expecting it to still be a banker in 2052 when in lots of ways I would be very fortunate, and have beaten the odds to make 80!) which means there is slim chance of a ‘normal’ tasting however, but please Still count me in if it happens.

I am sure wherever we go it will be a fabulous occasion, also worth remembering that depending on the sort of tasting planned the B&F can seat 20+ in the ovens, I think we had 19 in the end for the 77 from Mag and Tappit Hen and there was room for more.
