1993 - A hunt

Hello,

I'm afraid I seem to be unfortunately cursed by having been born in 1993. It's coming up to my 25th in December and while I have a few very good 1994 Ports and plenty of drinking well 1993 table wines, I'd really like a Port from 1993. Suggestions of blending some of my stocks of 1992 and 1994 same producers have already been received.

So It's a total wild stab, but does anyone on here have a bottle of anything Port from 1993, for one and be willing to part with it for another? Or at the least suggestions of where to get it, or advice to give it up as a non-starter.

There is only one known declared vintage port from 1993, Q. Licieras, but it's really hard to find, and the only known stockist (in Portugal) is holding out for an absurd amount.

There are a small number of LBVs also, and the Q. Crasto LBV is actually a decent wine, but again, hard to find.

I am under stocked on the vintage, so have nothing to spare.

If you look at it from the bottling date perspective however, you could celebrate with a 1991 vintage port bottled in 1993 - of the ones that are easy to locate, the Graham is probably the best.

I could supply a bottle with good label for £45.00. There are also other good, but less well known vintage ports from 1991 which are cheaper, such as Morgan and Q. de la Rosa.

Vintage port from 1993 is essentially a non-starter, as Tom describes. I would suggest either looking at VP from 1991 bottled in 1993, or alternatively you could look for Colheita (essentially vintage tawny port) from that year, such as the Kopke 1993 Colheita.

Barros also made a late bottled vintage port from grapes grown in 1993. Wine Searcher shows a couple of retailers, but they want significant amounts of money for a bottle.

Join the '93 club! I've been very fortunate to be able to get a bottle from '93 (quinta das liceiras) - to give you a heads up, I paid £200 for it a few months back.

Just don’t buy it from this place in Porto. The price tag washed out with the flash but it reads 999 Euros!

We should indeed, invite all those who happen to have the misfortune to be born in a non vintage, even wash out year. "Misfortune Club"?

Plenty of Bordeaux and Rhone wine still around, and I've got a Italian Barolo lying up. Just need to get drinking it all.

I actually don't have much else in terms of '93 (or any space left to store things). I've been looking at trying to get some sweet wines - I've heard Royal Tojaki is very good for our vintage, if not quite expensive.

I have a godson who was born in 1993. I couldn’t get him a case of port from his birth year but I did get him a case of Tokaji - it is a superb year for Tokaji. There are also some pretty good Australian wines, if my memory serves me well.

Gosh, that really is uncommon. There's no tasting note for it on the tasting notes database; possibly a candidate for the in-the-works 'ports for which there isn't a tasting note on the tasting notes database' tasting...

I bought a case of halves from the quinta when I was there in 2006. They are for my son as it is his birth year. To date he has shown absolutely no interest in Port but am holding onto them for him for now as the case is becoming quite valuable because of the rarity.

I know of one single bottle of this that is owned by someone here who might be willing to open it for the tasting you refer to

I've recently had the 1994 several times and it's mature but still quite nice. I hope those are doing as well, but the year wasn't so good...

Certainly true, but from a different region to Port and with no big mountains in the way to cause the clouds to drop their worst on the vineyards like they did in the Douro.

Certainly, but not just yet.

One of my house rules is that the last bottle from each vintage must be preserved until it's 200th year. That can also be the only bottle.
