I drove from VNG through the Douro valley back home via Spain a couple of days ago, taking a very scenic route, partly on purpose and partly due to my SatNav having a bad attack of Alzheimers..

There is an awful lot of abandoned and derelict property around, and also a considerable number of abandoned vine terraces.

Despite this, any attempt to source property through web based agencies results in a lean offering of properties, usually landless and very steeply priced.

When large amounts of property in an area is left to rot, it cannot command a price premium!

Some ruins have the word VENDE and a telephone number painted on them - my Portuguese is minimal, so I didn't try phoning - I suspect the way forward is to engage a local surveyor to tour the area with you and make the necessary enquiries on your behalf.

However, the euro is currently riding absurdly high, and the people of the Iberian peninsula (both Spain and Portugal) have been gorging themselves on cheap credit. The party is ending in the US, it is beginning to end in the UK, and I suspect in another year it will be looking none too clever in Portugal as well.

At that point, the owners of these properties may be much more realistic about their valuations!
