Re: A 1970 horizontal, Tiers 1 & 2, Friday 9 October 2020
Moving on to assembling the cast.
Tier 1 should be easy...
From Tier 2 I have:
- Burmester (Library release)
- BBR Own Selection (same case 2 bottles)
- Delaforce (same case 2 bottles)
- Roeda (Magnum)
- Gonzalez Byas (same case)
- Messias Cachao (same case) - I am pretty sure Messias only produced a Cachao
- Krohn (same case) .
Possibly I can get the other sogevinous wines Calem / Kopke / St Luiz /Barros?

Thanks Tony. Give me a couple of weeks to finalise who has what and I'll be in touch about sourcing others.

Mike
Have the following (all bottles) that probably meet requirements for the tasting(s):
Tier 1 & 2
2+ Dow (from the same case as the bottle tasted on 9 Jan)
2+ Morgan (from the Christie's clear-out sale)
2+ Cockburn (2016 release, direct from C&B)
2+ Warre Private Cellar (2016 release, direct from C&B)
2+ Noval (Churton's bottling - all purchased together & look identical, but can't absolutely confirm they came from the same case)
2 Rebello Valente (same auction lot and look identical, but...)
2+ Croft (from a previously unopened OWC - quality can be corroborated by PhilW)
Tier 3
1 Royal Oporto (final bottle from an OWC purchased at Christie's many years ago).

Re: A 1970 horizontal, Flights 1-4, Friday 9 October 2020
For those who attended the 1970 horizontal in 2009, can you recall if the Messias was not actually Messias Cachão? This post seems to confirm that there was no 1970 Messias.
Re: A 1970 horizontal, Flights 1-4, Friday 9 October 2020
I have Kopke St Luiz and Gonzalez Byass, both from known good stock, with back-up bottles available.

Re: A 1970 horizontal, Flights 1-4, Friday 9 October 2020
I have a note from a tasting in 2011 that there is a Messias 1970. Most of the grapes for this wine came from Quinta do Cachão but the blend also included some old vine lotes which had been bought in from farmers who were long-standing suppliers of grapes and wine to Messias but with land outside Cachão and therefore the wine could not strictly be called Quinta do Cachão. My notes also suggest that only 500 cases (of 12 bottles) of the Messias blend were made that vintage - and my notes were based on a conversation with someone who I am entirely confident who knew what they were talking about in substantial detail.

Thanks you for this wonderful insight Alex. I think this means we will continue the hunt for a 1970 Messias, while the TN for the mentioned above still needs amendment.AHB wrote: ↑23:06 Fri 31 Jan 2020 I have a note from a tasting in 2011 that there is a Messias 1970. On a related matter, I recall making an oath to myself never to knowing be in the vicinity of Hutchison 70 again!flash_uk wrote:For those who attended the [url=viewtopic.php?p=21337#p21337]1970 horizontal in 2009.

@JDAW, I'm now a bit confused. Above, you say that the bottle at the 30 Jan 2009 tasting was actually Cachão, linking to a picture of a Cachão bottle. But that picture comes from a separate bottle tasted in April 2009, where the tasting note laments that Cachão was missing from the 30 Jan 2009 tasting. Could you recheck?

Of same-case 1970s, I have only Gonzalez Byass. I could easily provide 2 plus a backup bottle.

More relevantly, I don’t recall.
