LBVs: New York, Thursday 8th May 2008?

With planning for the April tasting suggesting LBVs, let’s do something a little more random in May. Bottles of Barros 1947 and 1952 are ‘cluttering’ my collection: would there be interest in a theme of Old and Odd, though vintage nonetheless?

I’ll be in the UK the third week of May (including a tasting in Wokingham), so early May works far better for me.

Thoughts?

I think I mentioned this one to you before, but how's this for Old and Odd: Butler & Nephew 1932? I can't think of a better opportunity to open that one up!

Sounds like fun and who better to open some odd bottles with?

I could contribute a bottle of Schonfield 1873, which is what the wax capsule says. Good, bad, I have no idea. It was an add-on in a lot that I purchased a number of years ago.

What? It seems that people aren’t objecting to O&O. Please say what treats you have.

And where? One possibility, date dependent, is, again, the increasingly traditional Bistro Citron:

If people need to adopt, I also have bottles sold at auction as Hopper 1938 and 1942. They really should be tasted side-by-side: for sale all-or-nothing.

Are you sure that you have the name right? I believe that this could be an English bottled port from the long disappeared merchant Schofield Brothers. If it is, then I believe - but it is a very tenuous belief - that this is the Sandeman 1873.

Of course, if you open it then please tell us what it is and what you think of it!

Sotheby’s have sent me a copy of the relevant pages of the catalogue, and—my fault—they are indeed Hooper, not Hopper.

Alex, well done. It is indeed Schofield Brothers. It has a nicely embossed yellow lead capsule with 1873 prominently displayed. There is a handwritten tag from a prior owner indicating that this was a Manchester importer. Broadbent confirms Manchester.

If Alex can make it, let's try for a date that works for him also.

I've kept quiet up until now on the dates as I have been happy to watch the organisation unfold before my eyes. However, I am required to present myself to plaintiff's counsel in Pittsburgh for examination some time in May and could probably swing by New York on my way home. The only dates that would work would be Thursday May 8 or (at a push) Friday May 9.

However, since my travel has not yet been arranged, please do not let me influence the choice of dates if the 8th or 9th would be inconvenient for others.

Alex: if you “swing by† on your way to the US, then it would be easier for you to bring something interesting (or at least, old and odd). Just an observation.

And as nobody else has much of an opinion on dates, we could gather around your availability.

This is true. The week in question is a public holiday in the UK so I would likely not travel out until the Tuesday. This would, theoretically, mean that I could attend a tasting in New York on Tuesday 6 May.

However, I have discovered that I am required to be in Phildelphia and not Pittsburgh. This opens up the advantage of using the train to get to New York and therefore being able to treat with more respect an Old and Odd bottle. Because of this, my preferred date would still be Thursday 8 May with Friday being my second preference.

If you check out the LBV thread, you will see that I have begged off the April tasting and proposed it for mid-June instead.

Do we have a location yet for O&O? If not, I would be happy to host it at my home (partial recompense for delaying the LBV tasting).

I'm happy to go for the Hoopers 1944, it means that I can bring a particular bottle that I've been waiting to try which I am very curious about.

It does depend to some extent on what mood I am in when I choose the bottle that I am intending to bring.

Suffice it to say, that it will not be as old as the one that Jay has mentioned opening, but it will be from the same monarch's reign.

For the purposes of the placemats, simply note it as "Garcia Refreshed".

The manager at Bistro Citron says that, on Thursday 8th May 2008, he can accommodate up to a limit of ten people. That’s as many as we would want, so, failing cogent objection soon, Bistro Citron it is.

I think I can make the 8th if there is room and I can source. Gotta tell you all that I really enjoyed the 77 port night, talked about it for weeks after.
Dovetail was a great spot, I will be revisiting shortly with wife.
I have found port lovers are very similar to wine lovers, except they drink more water and some have accents, LOL

I can confirm that I will be fleetingly in New York on May 8th, so please book me a space. The Steak FrÃƒÂ®tes at Bistro Citron were excellent last time.

I really apologise for the late notice and any inconvenience that might be caused, by my lawyers have rescheduled my deposition and moved it back a week.

We need a decision. Possibilities:

Punish Alex for employing unreliable lawyers by keeping the current plans;
Punish g-man for having a drinking chum who employs unreliable lawyers, by moving the date forward a week;
Keep date of 8th May, change theme, and encourage Alex to bring his old bottle next time.

I vote for keeping the date and changing the theme. Others?

Apparently, we have just changed counsel. This means that what was a defeinite commitment for me to be in New York in May is now a definite possible requirement.

So, basically, I am not sure when I will next be in the "Big Apple". As soon as I know, I would be delighted to be able to be used as an excuse for an offline.

If you are willing and able to delay the O&O theme for my next visit, I would be very appreciative as I really would like to try the Schofield Brothers 1873 to see what it is. I have a choice of two bottles that I might bring to accompany it. One is from 1890 amd the other from 1854 - the latter has just started to seep quite badly and so needs to be drunk soon.

Alex's offer is too tempting to not delay the 0&O tasting. So, LBVs it is. Same location, I assume.

And who will be coming now?

I have at hand in Brooklyn a Niepoort 1992, Churchill 1990, Osborne 1997, Osborne 1999, Osbrone 2000, and Quinta do Infantado 2000.

I would recommend the Niepoort and the Churchill although I could supply the others if we need them.
