Re: Latest buy
I’m trying - and generally succeeding - not to buy much Port these days but I did succumb to temptation and bought 3 bottles of Taylor 1963 and 3 bottles of Taylor 1955.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Re: Latest buy
I've scored yet more LBV recently, but also - at last..! - a couple of odd bottles of VP.
A few minutes ago I grabbed a lone T70, good level, EB, no label, for £70 hammer. Not a target lot, but seemed a good punt as the sale at Sworders timed out. I also grabbed 8 bottles of Dow '01 LBV for £100. Although T-stoppered, these middle distance Dow LBVs throw loads of sediment and show well, so appear to be effectively unfiltered.

Hello all,
New to TPF and just introduced myself on the other thread.
Last night picked up the following;
Warre's 2008 LBV - On offer @ Waitrose for £19.11 (Have had up to 25% off a lot of Port's at Waitrose)
Fletchers 2016 LBV - £9.99 @ Aldi
Cheers.

I love the Warre Bottle Matured LBVs. I haven’t tried the Fletcher’s. Please do tell us what you think of it when you open it.

Third delivery from Churchill’s Port Club. As and when someone opens the ‘club bottle’, please post a note and let us know how it is. I am trying to save it for the virtual tasting or even longer.

Re: Latest buy
Mine arrived today as well.
Possibly mildly surprised that it consists of three tawnies, one of which also came in the first pack (the 20YO, although it's a 2021 rather than 2019 bottling).
Thoughts?
Re: RE: Re: Latest buy
Mine seems to be stuck in delivery somewhere, so I haven't had a chance to inspect yet, but on one of the video chats with them, they did say they were planning to shift the types of port to match the seasons so I guess they're aiming tawnies at the summer months.nac wrote:Mine arrived today as well.

Re: Latest buy
I was a bit surprised too, but seasonally it is probably spot on and I guess will indicate a weighting towards the Ruby styles in the next pack and the one after if people renew. Overall I am very happy with the balance so far, although some LBV or Crusted by now would have been good… but there is plenary of time for some more of the range. All three of the bespoke club bottles have been very interesting, so much so that I find myself saving them for a special occasion rather than checking them out, but those that have tried them have been really positive. I am looking forward to the club virtual tasting or a TPF version of again, and then it will be very interesting to see what the September bottles will be and if there is a renewal offer following.
But back to the 3 bottles for this pack… with this weather they are perfect, and by the sounds of the weather over the next month, they are most welcome.
Re: Latest buy
I'm quite happy to get another of the 20YO - I thought it was a cut above when I tried it for the first time from the earlier shipment.

Re: Latest buy
Opened the 2019 20YO on Friday and was really impressed. Quite dry and rancio. Liked it a lot. Might open the 2021 10YO and 20YO together.

Yes it was Cheffins, thanks for the offer of collection but I need to go to Sworders as well to collect some burgundy's and a couple of bottles of port, so should do both at the sametime.

That’s a very nice Port, drinking only too well at the moment but very able to slumber in the dark for another decade or two. Good purchase.

12 more halves of Niepoort 2017. A top-up to celebrate a good thing happening. I now have stock to enable me to drink one every year to track the evolution of this (currently extraordinary) port until it reaches the 'standard' drinking window. Then I can start on the bottles. I have a magnum lined up for my 75th.

That’s an impressive selection of Ports! I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like those two old clear glass bottles before for Port. The amount of sediment suggests their contents have been in them for some time...Delinquent wrote: ↑04:50 Wed 14 Jul 2021 i've received my curiosity delivery last friday.

Re: Latest buy
They are realy something special - I do have some in green glass as well.
The story behind them is quite intressting. My friend who supplies me with these gems lived for a couple of years in Portugal. By accident he met a nice quy and over the years they got frieds... this quy is in the Port business, as supplier of Restaurants, Shops and Hotels. A few years ago, the guy bought the remaining stock of Amandios cellar. Many bottles are impossible to identify - as these. No clue what is inside... the only thing that is known for sure ist the vintage - 1945, as they where all wearing metal plates. There are quite some more bottles like this. I could get hands on a Colheita from 1867... I'll do some pictures and post them.
I'm really fascinated with such thing.. living history
And btw, they are absolutely stunningly good.

Checking a few recent auction results - it looks like prices are coming off the boil. Not quite low enough to get me buying younger vintages yet, but vintages like '70 and '77 are not far off their pre-pandemic prices.

Does coming off the boil mean that prices drop?
'Coming off the boil' is used to mean a situation where the pressure to progress has gone away.
In the context of prices, it means stalling or going back to where they had recently been before rising. In a political or administrative context it might be used to indicate a situation where enthusiasm for a project or regulatory change has diminished - e.g. 'Following the discovery of costly geological problems, enthusiasm for building the tunnel has come off the boil'

Re: RE: Re: Latest buy
Interesting. That would suggest it really was people sitting at home and feeling bored on online auctions that was driving the prices!uncle tom wrote:Checking a few recent auction results - it looks like prices are coming off the boil. I am not sure I agree, I think there is just more Port on the market which has pushed prices down a bit in certain areas

Re: Latest buy
A mixed lot - a dozen bottles, almost certainly from a house clearance. Items that caught my eye were a Niepoort 30 yr, bottled 1990, and a pair of Quarles Harris 1978 LBV - I'm not sure I've seen an LBV under the QH label before.
An unusual lot in that it looked like collected xmas presents given to an uncle so an so, who supposedly liked port but actually didn't, yet spanning a wide timeline of about 36 years, the latest datable bottle being a Sandeman 2014 LBV.
Three of the bottles were dry whites. On past form I gave these zero value when bidding, and opened one immediately upon collection - a Fonseca Sirocco - after getting them home, half expecting to dump it in the cooking.
No idea how old the bottle was, the label looked fairly recent, but the T-stopper snapped, despite my gentle attempt to ease it.
Wine brownish, which is not a good sign.. but surprisingy drinkable - very sherry like and quaffable..
Maybe the Magalhaes tawny will marinate the meat instead..
