1978 Quinta do Noval

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

N78; another bottle from the two cases I bought about 15 years ago and have been loving ever since.

This bottle is a little muddy having been carried in a backpack to the Bring-A-Bottle tasting on Thursday and getting thoroughly shaken up. Red mahogany-brown colour; opaque due to the fine sediment. Sweet cocktail cherries on the nose with a dash of tobacco. The sweet cherry dominates the palate, a little brown sugar around the edges. The tannins still provide a little grip on the mid-palate but most of the structure comes from the well balanced acidity. Fresh aniseed shows on the late palate and dominates the aftertaste and finish. Great length. I continue to really enjoy this wine despite its poor reputation. 89/100. Decanted 2 hours. Drunk 23-Jan-2022.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
