1994 Berry Brothers

Post by winesecretary »

1994 Berry Brothers (Smith Woodhouse)
Dark. Full rich nose. Big rich dark fruited (licorice) port firing on all cylinders. I gave it a point. Narrowly (by 1-and-1/3 points) the group's WOTN.

Consumed, with considerable pleasure, 2/2/22.

Deep red colour with an opaque centre. Lovely berry nose, bramble with a hint of bottle stink. Restrained entry, lots of bramble and a bit of cracked peppercorn heat. Quite a youthful palate, still slightly closed. Generous bramble fruit, good acidity and plenty of tannin. A wine which has all the ingredients but needs more time to pull itself together. 92/100. Drunk 02-Feb-22. Decanted 4½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

85% opacity, dark red. Stunning nose, bramble, power. Just stunning. Bramble, power, balance, poise. Will be awesome in 20 years.
