1963 Fonseca

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Drunk after dinner at the George Hotel in Stamford. Opened for dinner were bottles of Coates & Seely La Perfide Rosé 2009, Chateau Lafite 1996, Quinta do Noval 1931 and Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931. A bottle of Fonseca 1963 from the Althorp cellars was opened after dinner.

Decanted at 18.30, drunk at 00.30. F63 from Althorp House. Mid shoulder with a very loose cork. Lovely mature, dark red; 50% opaque. Mature dried red fruit on the big and quite youthful nose. Quite youthful fruit on the palate, slightly peppery red fruit; redcurrant. Sweet redcurrant aftertaste and finish. Delicious, but so much simpler than the NN31. Good redcurrant finish with a touch of menthol. Very nice, but wholly overshadowed by the previous Ports. 91/100. Drunk 03-Feb-22. Decanted 6 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
