1997 Barao de Vilar
Barão de Vilar 1997 vintage Port; opened and served. This was the second vintage made by Alvaro and Fernando after their 1996 Vintage (and 1994 LBV). Intense dark red colour with a medium rim. Closed on the nose, probably due to the short decant. Some hard work brings out the baked red fruit and mace spice. Smooth texture, smooth fruit. Strawberry flavours with good acidity. Fine tannins provide support to the fruit, highlighting the secondary flavours starting to emerge. Strawberry fruit, a touch of cedar on the very fine length. Mature, thoroughly drinkable with a lot of pleasure, but plenty of life ahead of it. 90/100. Drunk 08-Feb-22. Pop 'n' pour.
Top Ports in 2022: Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931. I have never drunk such a wonderful bottle of Port. I cried with joy.
2023: Fonseca 1966. There are not many better Ports, except a good bottle of Fonseca 1927. Wow!
