1922 Martinez

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

An old bottle of unknown, believed Vintage, Port. Remnants of the label were still stuck to the bottle but little could be made out other than the fact the wine was bottled by a wine merchant in "...eter". Although the label did not identify the wine in the bottle, the cork was pushed in and bagged out and was clearly branded "Martinez Vintage 1922" - so opened to celebrate the anniversary of the wine.

Sadly the wine was elderly and drying out. Very mature and tertiary but still quite lovely with the generous acidity keeping the wine clean on the palate. Decent drinking but not great drinking. 87/100. Drunk 26-Apr-22. Decanted 1½ hours.

Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

40% opacity, amber brown, slightly cloudy. Slightly dirty nose. Sweet, candy, still has backbone and acidity, drying red fruits, strawberry.
