NV Carlos Alonso Piano White: Fine White

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Carlos Alonso's Piano is based in the Cima Corgo with 70ha of vineyards spread over two quintas to the north of Malvedos. They also buy grapes in from local farmers. The vineyards were replanted in 1985 and were first used to make table wine in 1995 and to make Port under their own name in 2015 (before which the Port was sold to Gran Cruz). The winemaker is Valter Sila and Carlos's daughter, Sofia, works on the marketing and sales side. Piano offers a range on Port styles including Dry White, Fine White, Pink, 10YO Moscatel, Lagrima, Fine Tawny, 10YO Tawny, Fine Ruby, 2015 LBV (b. 2020), 2017 LBV and vintage Ports from 2018 and 2019 (and a decision yet to be taken on 2020).

Piano is the brand used for the more traditional wines and market. Pale straw yellow, lychee and pineapple; sweet and delicious! Balanced, fresh - rather tasty! Full of honey and fruit. 40% Gouveio, 30% Malvasia Fina, 20% Codega do Larinho, 10% Viosinho. 87/100. Tasted 09-Jun-22.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
