2020 Quinta do Noval Nacional

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Presented by Christian Seely at a masterclass at the Gonzalez Byass portfolio tasting. The Nacional parcel is only 2ha of vines which have an average age of around 55 years. Of the vines, the oldest are the Tinta Cao.

Very similar in colour to the Quinta do Noval 2020 Vintage Port, a deep red with a narrow rim. This wine has a herbal tone to the blackcurrant on the nose and a lovely Mediterranean herb quality. Much more restrained than the exuberant Noval. On the palate this is poised, balanced and silky with great grip around the chocolate and sour cherry palate. Fine grained tannins grip, but don't dominate either the palate or the long, sweet blackcurrant finish. There is a wonderful contrast between these two wines - this is such a refined Port! 97-98/100. Tasted 14-Jun-22. Decanted 2 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
